Swiss Vignette warning

A fellow driver on entering Switz at Basel was pulled along with others on a vignette check. He had his taped to the screen without the back being peeled off. A CHF100 ‘fine’ and the vignette stuck to the screen properly and he was sent on his way.
Be warned…seems like theyre having another purge on it…

What was he driving?

I’ve never heard of that - maybe it’s for cars? I’ve always just got the LSVA form from the machines at the border.

He was driving the little 3.5t truck the co. i sub for uses for computer equipment. He was asked to do the job as the regular driver was off sick. He has a DKV card to pay the LVSA charge on his unit and trailer as hes a regular into Switzerland but i reckon (as a lot do) decided to tape it on to sell it on later…big mistake. Hes lucky to get away with CHF100 as its usually double that…

As you say a dumb chance to take. Sell on a 38euro sticker? Nah.

Theres plenty on ebay but why anyone would take the risk on such an amount when the fines far outway are beyond me

Quite so, and only valid for the next few days. But I s`pose if you gotta get one, even if only for one day, then you gotta get one.

A little unfair with the Swiss though (but a great revenue generator) only selling yearly vignettes, you’ll pay the same whether you visit for a day or drive there all year round, there are no smaller denominations. Austria does the 10 day vignette for small vehicles and Austrias Go Box for us isnt too bad, cheaper rates overall than the Swiss version…well it was last time i was there at least…

With a car at least might as well get hung for a sheep as a lamb by using the A road border crossings and just telling them you’re not using the motorways if they ask and want to take the risk.Paying for a year’s vignette just to run between Basle or Vallorbe and St Bernard once,or even a few times, per year for example is a rip off.Although can’t blame them for bringing the system in though after decades of being hit by the French and Italians for motorway tolls every time they wanted to make a trip to the Med coast for example.

It would have been fairer to just hit the French and Italian reg vehicles with a much higher charge in that regard and exempt their own and us and the Germans etc.Instead of which everyone is now following the rip off Italian and French money making scam.

I’ve only ever paid for vignettes online using my fuelcard, never had anything displayed, have i been breaking a law all this time by not displaying something or is it only certain countries that require that bit?

We brought one this year at Basel on our way to Italy for a holiday the guard or whatever he was leant in and put it on the near side and inside of the windscreen himself and gave Mrs BB a blast of his armpit odour at the same time .

If your driving through Switzerland in a car or on a motorcycle you don’t need a vignette if you stay off the motorways or away from certain tunnels. The 1st year I had one, I sold it on eBay. The 2nd year it tried to sell one eBay pulled the auction stating it was in violation of its rules. But yet there are hundreds listed on non U.K eBay sites. :unamused:
Another issue that seems to have arisen recently, is that if you fly in and hire a car. The insurance on Swiss registered hire cars isn’t valid outside Switzerland and its a non EU country. The hire companies are having to bring in cars registered in neighbouring countries. So if you intend to hire a car and drive it over the border make sure your intentions are know before you pick up the vehicle. As some of these online 3rd party intermediaries don’t have the above listed in their T’s & C’s when you book.
