Swiss road tax

The Truck that i drive at the moment is registered in Swiss, according to them it has to be the maximum design weight, 50 ton’s, when i registered it i showed them the weight we tax it for in England 28 tons , but they didnt want to know. we are going to put a private plate on the truck soon so i will have to re register it , Is there any way i can get the truck taxed at 28 tons gross

if you tax it in england at 28 tons why is it also registered in switzerland?
thought the maximum weight for swiss was 32 tons? or was that years ago and i’ve just not been for years?

For the purpose of road tolls in Switzerland they charge for what you can do with the vehicle, even if it is taxed at 28 tonnes in the uk it makes no difference because you can still carry more, unless the vehicle has been modified in some way to prevent it carrying more weight,(wheels, brakes etc) the truck is still capable of carrying 50 tonnes? although I was of the impression the limit was 40 tonnes in Switzerland.
We use road trains that are taxed at 38 tonnes, but when we go to Swiss they charge at 40 tonnes, but if we leave the trailer behind they charge at 18 tonnes. UK tax and what you can do in the uk has nothing to do with Switzerland so they just look at the vehicle itself.
I presume what you mean by being registered in Swiss is the toll card issued by the Swiss.

thanks for the explanation jimti but i read his post as he has swiss registered truck and taxed it in uk and is now changing the reg to private?
i’m confused
must be the way i read it?

I believe that the answer you are looking for is in here. If you reregister the vehicle and have it downplated at the same time. I would ring the local VOSA testing station and tell them why you want to down rate the vehicle.

Remember that the truck is registered in Switzerland already, so unless you do this properly you could be eating holey cheese and muesli as you languish in a swiss jail

Downplating

In the majority of instances it is no longer a requirement to make a technical change when downplating a vehicle. Downplating is now carried out by declaration without examination provided a plating certificate is in force and the alterations do not affect the road safety of the vehicle. Downplating below 7.5t still requires a technical change.

Complete a VTG10 and take it to the local Goods Vehicle Testing Station along with the VTG6 & 7 or, fora new unregistered vehicle, the Certificate of Conformity and the fee. It is not necessary to take the vehicle and the original chassis plate should not be changed.

Seems like i have confused people with the wording of my post ,sorry, when i said the truck was registered i ment , it had a toll card, the swiss go on the deign weight of what the truck can carry, but i was told by someone that you can get the truck registered at the weight that you tax it for in the country or orgin, uk in this case. you have to get in touch with the tax office, i think in Bern, i hoped soneone else had done this and could tell me what to do

try writeing to this e-mail address below.and explain to them what you are doing
or would like to do, They will understand if you write in english give them all details and a contact address /e mail,

I had that problem when I used to run at 31 tonnes and the Swiss wanted to tax it at the 38 tonne rate, which was even worse because at the time the max weight in Swiss was 34 tonnes. I contacted the office in Bern and they sorted it for me. I’ve PM’d you the email address I have for the person who sorted it, but this was a good few years ago so may no longer be valid.

Thankyou for all replys, will let you know how i get on

IF YOU ARE CHANGING THE REG THEN CARNT YOU CHANGE THE PAPER WORK FOR IT THAY CHARGE WHAT IT SAYS ON THE LOG BOOK IE PAPER WORK FOR IT : I WAS THERE A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO THAY JUST GO OF WHAT IS ON THE PAPER WORK :

You will notice on the HVF forms I sent you that there is a tickbox to make a change to your registration. They will need to cancel the original card and issue a new one for which they charge about 25CHF (in the case of loss anyway) The only details the Swiss have about your vehicle at the border is what is included on the V5C

You need to get the vehicle downrated or downplated at your VOSA testing station they will revise the VTG6 and VTG7 which then allows you to advise DVLA of your new weights and private registration number before issuing you with a new V5C
