All of them

Evening all, well for me it has to be the F series Volvo`s…its an age thing!

My pal still uses a flat top F12, round headlight 6x2, on low loader work, along side his FH16 6x2, and an ex Clarke FL10 on the F reg. Have a lovely shot of the F12, coupled to a 9ft 6in King tandem, loaded with an International Traxcavator on the front, and a D8 and blade on the back…steady 50mph all up the M1 from the Channel Tunnel site!

But those 240 F88`s with the 16speed, what a lovely warm lorry to drive…almost as good as a Foden with an air split 12speed…but with synchro easier for the "new " drivers.

Cheerio for now.!!!

I have five favourite lorries for restoration, number one is the humble Ford D1000, a 13ton flatbed would be my first choice, in second spot is the AEC Marshall. Last spot on the podium goes to the original King of the road, the Scania 141, a LHD 4x2 in full M/E spec, an F89 to the same spec takes fourth spot and last, but by no means least, a 1932 New Generation Merc, again in full M/E spec with the snorkel up the front of the cab.

They would all be royal blue cabs with post office red chassis and the edges of the rims painted white and wheelnuts/covers picked out in white or chrome, depending on the lorry, I have OCD, so they would be just as you could have one at the time of its registration, no place for anything from another era.

The Ford and the Leyland would be in concours condition with a properly sheeted load on the back.

The M/E spec lorries would all be coupled to a CF spreadaxle tilt, red chassis and side gates with a blue tilt and they would look like they had just returned from a trip to the desert, i.e. absolutely filthy dirty.

Not that I’ve given it much thought

That is what is missing from the shows- dirty lorries. Under the filth would be a restored-to-as-new vehicle, but the dirt would make it look like it has just returned from its first trip, just like in the day. Imagine a 140, in a simple, Euro-style livery, road spray up the sides of the cab, the arc of the wipers etched in the muck on the 'screen, paint already worn off the front towing pin, a dark patch of derv on the side of the tank. Excuse me nurse, would you pass the tissues, please.

Sayers used to run a very tidy fleet, all painted as above, by Gabby Sayers…never went rusty!
