Does anyone know if the vehicle you want to remove a cherished plate from needs an mot or not? I know this used to be the case as it cost me a lot of money to mot my dads morris minor so that I could transfer the plate to my car, however about 6 months after I did this someone told me that mots were no longer required.
Now a friend of mine wants to do the same but the vehicle has no mot, her mechanic has told her it needs a test, however according to the government website all you need is the logbook the fee and a sorn notification in place. And it needs to be available for inspection.
Anyone help please?
Like you said it used to need an mot, I scrapped an old mini with a cool plate as it would have cost 1000’s getting it on the road. My uncle took the plates off his 1955 Morris Minor and same age Royal Enfield bike a year or two ago incase he stopped putting them through MOT’s. He mentioned a few months back it was a waste of time now due to a law change but he was just protecting the old short numberplates.
Yep it still needs a test, you don’t have to send it anymore because they check it electronically. You get a period of grace if it’s expired though, 12 months I think
I bought a mondeo with a private plate in March, and the original reg was reissued so the former keep could keep his plate. It never went for a test, and the certificate shows the private reg, but it’s on the database under its original (and present) number. The good thing about the digital age is the databases update automatically
i had a private plate on a Granada…GAY 54
which was fine when i had the wife with me! when she ‘moved on’…so did the plate
