Yesterday heading north on the M5 outside Bristol about 4pm, I saw a R Swain truck with a flatbed trailer full of crushed cars, stacked three high IIRC. They were strapped down with ratchet straps but weren’t covered, and some of the cars had bits of metal sticking out, mostly on the left for some reason. I ‘only’ saw one little bit fall off, but there was nothing to stop any bigger bits.
Is that a safe way of restraining a load like that? I didn’t think so and got as far away from it as possible.
Never seen crushed cars restrained any other way than just strapped. Be hard netting it and a sheet would be ripped to shreads.
Saw 3 swains moving them up the m6 today.
Used to do casual for a scrap yard years ago and he had a old container with the roof removed. Would not be keen on carrying them on a flat bed, ,bits falling off, fluids some flammable, ruin or cut your straps, and the load will settle so checking your straps on journey would be essential.
hauled many a load of baled cars going for scrap, always cleaned the bed and bales of any loose items that may cause a problem before moving, always strapped down with rubber strips between the metal and straps to save cutting them. the use of scrap sheets is recommended but not necessary if you have had a good scour over the load for any loose items
