Supervising learner B+E

How long do you need to of held B+E before you can supervise another driver?

Thanks.

3 years with BE category.

It’s the same for any category.

Ok, i thought it was 3years on a car and 2 for everything else. cheers for that.

Only a year for d if you have held c for 3 years, same other way round

My girlfriend just wants to be able to tow our car trailer… Not get a job as a bus driver but thanks anyway  lol…

Best get her booked on a b+e course .

Your trusting your girlfriend with a trailer on your car she must be better than mine, 2 sets off break pads I put on hers a year and she only works round the corner! I out my mrs on my insurance only cause she’s got a 2 seater and me and my mates need picking up sometimes  I’m a nervous wreck when she’s driving mine let alone letting her pull anything in it!.

Well she only passed her fairly recently and we went out alot in the car together, she had a quite a few lessons but it was mainly me and her so i suppose shes kind of taken on my driving style (could be a bad thing! lol)… She’s a far better driver than i was when i first started driving (car)…

My mrs thinks she’s Lewis Hamilton one off them were 100 meters up the road the lights are green, I say ease off a bit there gonna change red babe but nope she won’t have it drops down into third foot to the floor just to end up doing an emergency stop when the lights turn red! She’s actually a pretty decent driver just needs to calm the ■■■■ down lol.

Lol thats well funny! I think most women are decent drivers but just dont think sometimes… Same as men really!

Mine girlfriend crashed her car a few weeks ago and she wasnt even in it… Started it up whilst standing outside the car, didnt check to see if it was out of gear and it went crashing into her mums garden fence and gate… Of course i was away but when she told me i ■■■■■■ myself laughing (not in a horrible way) lol.

Lol that’s funny always check it’s not In gear my boss’s brother parks his truck up in gear over the years I’ve started it a few times either almost get run over by it or if he’s left it in reverse it almost ends up through the wall behind it! After a few near misses I’ve learnt to check it now, I’m sure he does it just so he knows if anyone’s been in it sometimes I feel like emptying his air tanks when he’s ■■■■■■ me .

SUPERVISING A B+E LEARNER
In April 2010 new rules were introduced for those supervising certain learner drivers but they only affected those supervising VOCATIONAL categories such as C1 C1+E D1 & D1+E where the supervising driver had those categories given to them for free when they passed a pre 1997 car test.
They do not affect those with a pre 1997 B+E licence who wish to supervise a B+E learner.
All B licence holders have B+E provisional on the paper part of their licence and can tow an empty or loaded trailer on all roads including motorways.
The usual rules apply when a learner is driving -
The supervising driver must be aged over 21
The supervising driver must have held a B+E licence for at least 3 years
L plates must be fitted to the front of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer
Correct insurance for a B+E learner

The B+E test
No medical or theory test required
Read a number plate from a certain distance
VIDEO - Show Me Tell Me Questions - usually 5
The next three can be in any order:-
VIDEO - Reversing Exercise - done in test centre grounds if test conducted from practical test centre - some tests are now being done from training school grounds
DSA REVERSING TEST AREA DIAGRAM
VIDEO - Uncouple/couple up - done in test centre grounds if test conducted from practical test centre - some tests are now being done from training school grounds
One hour road drive - includes the independent drive and is done virtually the same as the basic car test

DISCLAIMER - I have no connection to any companies which may be featured in those videos

With the right vehicle and trailer combination she can tow a decent sized trailer on her B licence - example
Vehicle
GVW 2000
Kerb 1500
towing capacity 1500

Trailer
MAM 1500
Unladen 700

Max load for trailer 800

Thanks rog I did try looking on the internet but they’ve changed the dvla site. I’ve only had B+E for two years so I can’t do it that way. The car is a volvo 850 which I think doesn’t weigh more than 1400kg and the MAM of the trailer I think is 1500kg so I believe I also fall foul of that as well despite the outfit weighing less than 3500kg. She passed before in dec 2012.

Not sure which 850 model you have from that list but will use an example …

Volvo estate 850 GLT 2.0
GVW 1970
kerb 1490
Towing1600

The maximum plated MAM on a trailer for B licence towing will be 1490 kgs

I have a t5 so its 3kgs lighter… Ok thats great but of course its still not legal. Out of interest what happens if your car trailer doesnt have a plate on it? Im not thinking of doing anything dodgy by the way.

The total of all the tyre load ratings are used as the MAM up to a max of 3500 kgs

If the trailer manufacturer is still trading then they can arrange for it to be down plated for little or no cost

The rule where the trailer MAM must not exceed the vehicle kerb weight is currently under review and I am waiting for a definitive on this rule from the DfT minister via my MP
This occurred during the 19/01/2013 changes where that bit was omitted but the DVLA verbally state it is still in force for all B licence towers

I will still give that rule because it seems prudent to do so but if your trailer is 1500 kgs plated MAM then realistically I doubt any action would be taken against a driver as long as the 3500 total MAM rule is obeyed
