My brother in law currently drives coaches but is on about, yet again, doing his lgv licence. he’s adamant he can do his c+e straight away as he drives a bus so can bypass his class 2. Once he passes he’s gonna work for a supermarket with a big yellow M. i’ve told him, he’ll have to do his class 2 first and will be lucky to get into any supermarket straight away. Having never done supermarket work i’m not sure if i’m correct. Any help on this gratefully received. Thanks
He does need to do C first unless he already has it of course.
Supermarket work isn’t easy to get into as far as I know. Usually you have to get in on the agencies
I didn’t think it was that easy to get on. I looked at it once, and was told i would have to get in through a subby they used for 8 weeks, then i could transfer over. As for the C licence, i keep telling him he has to do it, and to get some experience first, and do general haulage, fridges etc so he has so knowledge.
I’ve worked for I*****d for nearly 7 years, been at the Warrington depot in the warehouse since it opened and even I can’t get driving with them! Pestering the life out of 'em but I may have a foot in the door at last, possibly, maybe, hopefully…
To be honest I think it would really be down to luck if he got straight into supermarket work. I should imagine most permanent supermarket drivers probably start with an agency and get taken on because they are known and in the right place at the right time if a job comes available, but there no rule that says that’s the way it has to work.
The usual way in is through the agency this is the case where I work and I imagine it would be the same for Morrisons I suppose they like to have a look at a driver before ther offer him/her a start.
I’m not sure it would be the best place to start, some of the delivery yards are a [zb] maybe a stint elsewhere so to avoid blowing it if he really wants a start would be best.
Post what depot he’s going for and someone on here will give you more detailed information.

I may be wrong but in the scheme of things a class C is a higher qualification than a class D, however even if you have a class C or C+E you still have to take a test to drive a class D.

I think you are wrong, as surly if it was a higher qualification then having a rigid licence would allow you to drive a coach.
All it is is different vocational licences.
Stay away from supermarkets, especially tesco, aim higher guys ffs…!!!

Depends really. I’ve known Asda take 21-25 year olds from their warehouse and train them rather than employ a driver who’s experienced. Also, during my past employed jobs were I’ve got to know a load of different drivers, to my amazement you can find a few of them employed at Asda when I go in there on the agency !!! I don’t know how they get a job there but they do !
If you contact agencies round my area and tell them you want supermarket work THEY bend down and lick YOUR boots.

Work for “one of the others”. Gross just under £700 per week, in my own bed every night, 60 hrs off every other w/end. max. 40/42 hrs per week. 6 months full sick pay per year if needed. No pressure to be “there” at booking times, no speeding points,( unless i decide to hurry!) Yea, i must think about going back to being a “proper driver”,living in a tin can all week and waking up in smelling of ■■■■ lay byes, being week-ended away and not knowing when i’m going to finish, 'cause then i can call myself a “proper driver” again ! But, hey-ho, each to there own.
As above poster said aim higher -supermarket work is glorified shopping trolley

I don’t think the job would suit me, but wouldn’t knock anybody for doing it, seems to be an easy enough job and pays the bills.

Sounds awful I doubt the OP’s brother in law would like trollying.

Yes it’s different not higher so doing CE definitely requires a C licence first although there are very limited circumstances where a Cat.C holder can drive a vehicle in D but not the other way round.
As with what others have said, he needs his C licence first. I got my D first but auto only I then did my C which also upgrades D to a full manual entitlement. What got me though, I could drive a double decker bus 15t gross but couldn’t drive a 7.5tonner
Thanks for your responses. I know he has to do cat c first, although it does annoy him that he can drive double deckers etc but not trucks, but all i say is, thats the rules…Doubt he’ll do any of them though, he’s been on about it for years

absolutely spot on. I wouldn’t want to do anything else. Especially after reading some of the things on here
You are correct, he’ll need to do his C before his C+E, and wait for licence to come back etc. If he argues, ask him where his C+E provisional is
You don’t need any C experience to do C+E though, just the licence.
