Supermarket's Backhauling

Noticed over the last month or two we seem to be doing alot more backhauling from suppliers to our place.
we go into coca cola at jct 41 at least 2 times a day, We go to the brewery yards at Whitwood and Burton. we collect from Van de bergh at worksop and several other places…
But the best one was over the last two months we have been collecting TESCO and SAINSBURY :open_mouth: chickens and turkeys when we do a trailer change with the scottish lads at purdy lodge and taking them to REED BORDALL , SO whats going on there then■■? Surely MR SOMERFIELD wouldnt be too happy to know the logistics company he is paying for is moving products for rival firms.

As a side note i was on a collection last night from the Coors/exel place at burton last night i collected 16 pallets and noticed on the paperwork that it had the rate for the job… It stated that it was 85 miles and the rate for the job was £117.26 (1.37pm) which looking at some of the threads on here i guess aint too bad a rate??

So are they just making the best use of the fleet to boost profits or are they trying to take over more and more work by doing more and more of there own or SOMEONE ELSES collections!!

i did a bit of agency work for trade team out of burton (exel) and had to collect goods for bhs (exel)atherstone.

its just economising

The places you mention about backhauling,I used to go to when I was at Sherburn.

I see nothings changed then.

When I was TM at Toray my mate, the Export Shipping Manager, called in a haulier to load for Germany. An irate call came from the MD when he saw a curtainsider emblazoned with our only European competitor’s logo glide past his window  .

Needless to say, that haulier was told never to bring that trailer onto the site again. :unamused:

Salut, David.

Is it not all part of the ‘new’ idea of factory gate pricing??

Although we don’t do any for Tesco or Sainsbury, we do some that seem a bit odd - ie, have nothing to do with SF.

We also do one run out, that is also in this category :open_mouth: .

I like doing collections personally, because it gives me more time to have a kip and I don’t have to put empties on. The flip side being that you can be stuck at places for hours on end some days when you want to get a move on.

BTW, do you know the fella with a skinhead at your place who goes into Fowler Welch - Coolchain at Spalding most nights. Goes to Louth first I believe. Drives a DAF 85 with one of the new 44s. Doesn’t say very much… The rest of your lads are a friendly bunch though.

I know who you mean but dont know him to speak to with been on different shifts.

Excellent less trucks running empty sounds like a good plan to me it could also hopefully mean less on the roads eventually which would benefit us all in the long run.

i used to work for safeway(exel)…one run was to tip portsmouth area reload southampton docks with flour to be run to washington( asda, exel).should have seen the faces when you used to turn up at asda with a safeway truck and trailer.

i am now at sainsburys. and the number of backhaul we do is increasing with a fair rate being paid. similar to those who do the general hauling for the suppliers. just makes sense not to run empty. we’ve started a couple of new ones this week collecting flour and sugar.

Asda have been going into area 41 to coke for some time now,and they seem to get held up for some reason, dont now why? perhaps it’s payback time??

I saw an ASDA artic loading in Coca Colas in Edmonton this evening.
