Supermarket store deliveries

anyone think there is some sort of a plan for the big 4 to outsource all their lorry operations? especially Tesco - vevery transport firm seems to be doing store deliveries and their own fleet isn’t growing.

We were tapped up to do some trunking work for Tosco but nothing come of it .

Supermarket drivers get paid very well and have good terms and conditions, ditto the drones in the sheds. By bringing in Stobart for a fixed fee the supermarket saves money and has a set overhead. Stobart make it pay by gutting the wages and benefits of the drivers.

Companies will always do what is best for the profit margins, usually at the expense of people at the bottom unfortunately. Stobbies are no exception along with all the other big players, if they can pay you the min wage they will, sign of the times now.

Doubt it as supermarkets have stopped expanding…

It’s now in the public domain that southern drivers will protect their T&C’s whilst those of drivers further from London have made it a point to brag that minimum wage is better than taking government handouts.

So be it. The ‘new deal’ has come home to roost. :frowning:

Stobarts don’t have the right mentality to obtain good industrial relations in this south eastern part of the world, which I guess explains the lack of their depots in these parts.

Re above I have to say a mate of mine worked at Asda Normanton ‘in-house’ and his wage wasn’t all that brill in fact for his shift which was days he got paid less per hour than general haulage and same rate for working Sat & Sun plus he did a crap any 5 from 7 which meant 6 full weekends out of 10! He only made decent money after 9.75hrs a day which he very rarely got as they kept overtime down!! Due to his hours always been between 6-8 in morning start he didnt get enhanced rate as he started and as he had always finished before 6pm didnt get enhanced rate that end either!!!

Sainsburys are and have been expanding in scotchland, many more shops to come still.

But since start of credit crunch in 08 sainsburys have refused to take on perm drivers but instead lead the way in screwing down rates for agency drivers they depend on. A two tier workforce, a min 8hrs now 6hrs.

Morrisons in bellshill also has refused to take on perm drivers since 08 prefering agency bods and subbies instead.

If only agency bods could go on strike that would force these liberty takers to rethink and take on the perm drivers they need.

Asda/walmart Norfolknewbie has always been the lowest paid of the big four.

Agency bods can turn down any job they like. When Tossco introduced the 6 hour guarantee I told my bloke not to even think of asking me to go there. He paid me a guaranteed 10 hours for a while but then said he couldn’t maintain it so I put Tossco on stop. Why do you think Tossco didn’t have such a good year last year? :grimacing:
