Supermarket shelf full or shortgate of any food?

Only shortage I found in the run up to Xmas in Tesco.
Was bacon they had shelves stacked out with streaky bacon.( Guessing that’s what you use to make pigs in blankets?)
But yeah they had.no decent thick cut bacon all the space was full of streaky bacon.

About only shortage I’ve seen.
But doubt that was even a shortage they probably had loads of bacon in the back just decided to stick streaky bacon out

All prepacked supermarket bacon is crap; what they advertise as “thick cut” is still half the thickness of the catering bacon that caffs use, and at least twice the price.

Only honourable exception seems to be Aldi which sells large packs of what appears to be catering stuff, which I buy then split in half and freeze.

If you can see daylight through an uncooked rasher it ain’t proper bacon.

That’s…

Parma Ham then.

You are supposed to use streaky bacon to cover the turkey while it’s cooking.Lovely after.

The only genuine shortage I have come across is the supply of CO2; I asked one of our Calor customers about this and was told that whilst it’s by no means as acute as the media would have us believe, supply is still a bit erratic.

Why don’t that surprise me :unamused:

Enough turkeys in the shops? Yes, there are.
Back in the summer UK producers realising there would be slaughter house issues cut production from their plans, and the supermarkets took measures to find others.
This year, for the first time since (?) we have had to import turkeys.
This year some turkey prices stayed the same, some rose by up to 30%.

So we pay more, we give EU turkey farmers more money, UK farmers less money.
Fewer poultry workers get work in UK but more do in EU.
We pay more but the Gov gets less taxes for hospitals.

Yep, the shelves are still stocked, brilliant ain`t it.

We work with a few poultry farmers and slaughterhouses around the country, and I can tell you from the farmers mouth that there was no shortage of turkeys.
Slight shortage of staff for some earlier in year, along with most industries, but not enough to affect production in the end.

Again you are the only person believing the media. The penny must begin to drop soon. Assuming you have a penny in your brain bank?

Graph of turkey production up to Oct 2021 (newest data I can see) with previous years lines also…

2021 starts off with notably lower production than other years, in the summer is approx the same, but in previous years when it increases, this year it just bounces along.
Last year was lower than previous years too.

Turkey producers you spoke to are doing OK?
Fair comment, but are you going to, and talking to, those farmers who decided to not produce turkeys this year?

A turkey production graph!

There are good reasons for that. After the 2020 season, a lot of farmers, particularly the smaller ones who only supply to the fresh market but also those who supply hospitality, were understandably cautious about the potential for another serious lockdown so they were reluctant to increase production lest they be left with birds which they would then have to sell to the frozen market at a much lower price.

There is a knock-on, of course; producing less turkeys means farmers buy less feed, bedding and medicines; they also hire less seasonal labour and use less hauliers.

That makes a lot of sense. Fresh turkey seems to be (except Christmas) a caterers meat rather than something bought for home use.

No shortages in the south west that I saw although my transport manager seems to be getting a bit cocky again after recruiting a few numpties who get away with murder.

Andrejs:
9 month Bbc and newspaper "wash brain"who drivers shortgate and will be shortgate of food and everything at Christmas. I not seen any empty shelf but what you see??When they start talk about Christmas 2022 emplty supermarket shelf.?Merry Christmas to everyone.

went to Asda superstore next to Etihad this morning and quite a few of the bits and bobs that the wife wrote down was unavailable

I had my ocean spray cranberry juice substituted with Asia’s own brand.
Also swapped my non organic mushrooms for organic mushrooms

A Sunday, after New Year, and with a Bank Holiday tomorrow…not exactly typical.
