We’ve gone from unlimited trucks and a 60 mph HGV speed limit on motorways and log books to the current position of digi tachos and trucks plodding around at 85-90 kmh max with legal 15 hour days. We’ve also got roads that were running safely without any problems that were subject to the national speed limits now subject to ridiculous levels of speed limits and over enforcement. The results seem to be worse levels of safety than we had before. :unamused:

I don’t think there were no problems then, but there was less traffic and driving didn’t feel so safe. If you had a major crash in the 60’s or 70’s then you would most likely die. Crash now and you have a fair chance of survival. Our tin boxes, certainly cars give us a sense of invincibility.

And yes the arbitrary speeds limits now on our roads are in the main outdated and too low. More and more 50 limits and specs zones. The speed kills mantra reigns supreme.

Yet driver inattention is far more likely to be the cause of a crash than speed by itself.

We now have too many cars and trucks on the roads, a poor basic driving test and too many people who don’t take driving seriously.

Oh yes and a government who sees motorists as an easy pool of people to get money out of.

This is refreshing, reading some of these posts proves that there are still some (a dwindling number) who can think for themselves, and not just spout the indoctrinated political dogma of the day*…which might have been different yesterday and likely different again tomorrow…do keep that hymnsheet on the right page there’s a good citizen.

cue ed milliband…it seems the previous fashion for unlimited immigration and branding anyone who dare raise an eyebrow a racist was wrong…typical bloody politician (his and his replacement’s view will change again too when it suits), stating the bleeding obvious, oblivious to the crass dogmatic hypocrisy and treason they have nearly all commited…come back Guy Foukes all is forgiven.

Its the dumbing down of everything to the lowest common denominator thats helping to ruin our country, the current frenzy over mobile phone use being one small example.
In another thread we have people asking for 4m height limits because licence holders can’t manage to miss low bridges, instead of simply admitting that some people will never be lorry drivers as long as they have a hole in their arse, we presumably should, yet again, accept the lowest common denominator and ban anything over 4m because an increasing number are not capable of driving trucks.

We rush headlong into a irreversiable era of total surveillance of body, word and thought, where the divided proletariat are encouraged to spy for the state, and unelected apparatchiks are the new master race…just watch the smug sods being driven along Zil lanes during the olympic fiasco.

The biggest laugh is that you, yes you, are paying for this headlong rush into the Stazi state, and seemingly welcoming it with open arms.

Bread and circuses, it worked in Roman times for control of the masses and it still works, currently football, booze and television for dummies.

Wake up.

So they have a tractor and now a lorry it’s just getting more stupid each day.
What do they want to see inside a lorry drivers cab for ? To see him smoking a spiff or drinking beer ?

Well said, cant argue with any of that, but I will add the 'Olympics'..... Just look at how the British public have been manipulated, mostly by the BBC. I have seen a couple of news reports and I just dont understand the frenzy that people are being lead into
As for the Magnum…It has all been covered…But I bet the chocolate will still break off at an inconvenient moment

The police radios are classified as PTT - Push To Talk. If you can prove you are using your mobile as a PTT device then you can probably get away with it. Handhold radios, cb, amateur radios are similarly classed and can be used while driving without prosecution.

Are you sure??

Funny that, the busses have foot buttons and handsfree mic’s because it was illegal to hold them, and people have been done for using handheld microphones on cb’s.

I believe it’s using a communication device, which is how some celebs get off their phone charge by saying they were checking the time or some crap, so not communicating.

Also, people have been done parked at the side of the road on the phone with their engine running because of the definition of ‘driving’.

Personally, I’ve noticed a change in my driving when holding a phone compared to when talking on handsfree, mainly noticable in manouvering though ie reversing onto a bay, but, I’m 1 person, another 10,000 might have no problems at all with it.

Fantastically well put Juddian, & it’s the end of that line that still shocks me. Not what’s written, but the fact that (for the vast majority) it’s true.

Think of the staffing levels in Auschwitz Birkenau & the fact that tens of thousands of (broken spirited) people walked headlong to certain death, I personally find this very moving the thought of these people knowingly walking into the gas chambers without putting up a fight. Now I’m not comparing the end results!!! but I am comparing the pasive unresisting way we (or at least some of us!!) just accept ‘what they say is wrong, is wrong’ & the most upsetting thing for me is that the authorities today, & the camp guards in Auschwitz had a force of ‘trustees’ who became a lower level of camp guard made up of prisoners.

To me, anyone taking up & supporting this nonsense & thinking it’s actually wrong to drive a truck without a seatbelt, & ayone caught doing this “deserves what they get” really have been ‘taken in’ by a bunch of people who don’t actually believe it any more than me. MP’s getting their wives to take their licence points, MP’s expences, Monica Lewinski “I did not have ■■■■■■ contact with that woman” (well, it was only a ‘nosh’!! :unamused: )

It’s all about controll, & once you start actually believing that you’re better off with a Hi-Viz than without it, the brain washing is starting to work.

I don’t pretend to be able to ‘blindside’ reverse between two parked trucks while holding a conversation on my iPhone, for one you need two hands on the wheel & a high level of concentration for that, infact, even on hands free I’ll say “hang on a min” & stall a conversation while doing anything like that. I (like you) know my limitations.

I hadn’t thought about that, where does control end, who’s keeping watch on the watchers.

Blimey I’ve been saying for ages that there’s a communist undertone in the way that we’re being governed. The government has been acting in a control freak communist way at least since Thatcher got into power and no surprise that the electorate continues to be brainwashed into the idea of how wonderful it is to see China getting richer at our expense just so long as politicians like her and their big business cronies get a good kick back from their Chinese commie masters.

londonandpartners.com/media- … 2-olympics

No surprise that ‘educational ties’ in this case will mean more British kids being brainwashed from an early age into accepting the Chinese view of the world. :imp: :imp: :unamused:

just flash your passport.

i personly think this is totally over the top i have seen the said truck out in action with all the car and bike outriders parked in laybys ready to pounce all the trucks i have seen pulled have been uk reg is this because they can rob us more easily then johnny forigner just face it it is nothing to do with road saftey and all to do with robbing the hard working english man of more money i bet the brave policemen manning the truck would not be so fast of the starting blocks if they were faced with an armed raider but they are big and brave when faced with a easy target they are the same as school yard bullies in my book total [zb]

Yes, you just know that if they saw a load of diddycoys in a lay-by stealing some truck driver’s diesel, they wouldn’t even bother reporting it on their radio.

Well, there is a bunch of advice around including such wonders of that if you need to make a call you need to be out of the drivers seat, engine off, handbrake on and if necessary in the passenger seat!!!

However, another I came across was this on the ROSPA site

Rospa Site:
The Law

On 1 December 2003, a law, “The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) (No. 4) Regulations 2003”, came into force to prohibit drivers using a hand-held mobile phone, or similar device, while driving. It also made it an offence to “cause or permit” a driver to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving, or to use a hand-held mobile phone while supervising a driver who only has a provisional licence.

The penalties were initially a fixed penalty of £30 or a fine of up to £1,000 if the offender goes to court (£2,500 for drivers of goods vehicles or passenger carrying vehicles with 9 or more passenger seats). From 27th February 2007, the penalty for using a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving increased to £60 and three penalty points added to the drivers’ licence.
The Definition of a Hand-Held Mobile Phone

The Regulation includes any “device, other than a two-way radio, which performs an interactive communication function by transmitting and receiving data”.

It states that a “mobile telephone or other device is to be treated as hand-held if it is, or must be, held at some point during the course of making or receiving a call or performing any other interactive communication function”. “interactive communication function” includes:

sending or receiving oral or written messages;
sending or receiving facsimile documents;
sending or receiving still or moving images; and
providing access to the internet

There are two exemptions:
2- way “press to talk” radios, such as used by the emergency services and taxi drivers
Using a hand-held phone for a genuine emergency call to 999 or 112 if it would be unsafe for the driver to stop.

The Definition of Driving

Under existing law a person may be regarded as “driving” a vehicle while the engine is running and the vehicle is stationary. The offence applies to all motor vehicles, including motorcycles, but not apply to pedal cycles.

There is quite a bit of information already on that site and of course other links to back up their info.

I could trawl to find the references in the 1988 Road Traffic Act and the Construction & Use Regulations, but I’m not going to right now. Other things need to be done too you know

Two-Way radio use has a specific defence / Exemption:

Statutory Instrument No. 2695 (2003)

The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) (No. 4) Regulations 2003

" Mobile telephones
110. - (1) No person shall drive a motor vehicle on a road if he is using -

(a) a hand-held mobile telephone; or

(b) a hand-held device of a kind specified in paragraph (4)."

SNIP

“(4) A device referred to in paragraphs (1)(b), (2)(b) and (3)(b) is a device, other than a two-way radio, which performs an interactive communication function by transmitting and receiving data.”

SNIP

(6) For the purposes of this regulation -

SNIP

(d) “two-way radio” means any wireless telegraphy apparatus which is designed or adapted -

(i) for the purpose of transmitting and receiving spoken messages; and

(ii) to operate on any frequency other than 880 MHz to 915 MHz, 925 MHz to 960 MHz, 1710 MHz to 1785 MHz, 1805 MHz to 1880 MHz, 1900 MHz to 1980 MHz or 2110 MHz to 2170 MHz; and

(e) “wireless telegraphy” has the same meaning as in section 19(1) of the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1949[3]."

Never the less, you can still be charged with Careless or Inattentive Driving, if a Police officer so feels that you may have committed that offence.

And what can we do if we ‘so feel’ that a police officer has been careless or inattentive whilst talking on a two way device?They-the police-seem to think that the blues and twos, along with the uniform, somehow makes them better drivers than anyone else.
