This isn’t a gloating post but intended as encouragement to all those new and wannabe drivers, like I was back in October 2013.
Started out with a drivers medical at the end of October 2013 after deciding to embark on training to gain my HGV Class 1 (C+E) driving licence, allowing myself up to 6 months to achieve this and be working as an HGV driver.
I’m an older driver 50+ and needed a change involving doing something that I enjoy, that is driving and also to provide a regular income. Fortunately, I was not short on funds to finance the training and take things a little further than my original plan.
In November 2013 I quickly learnt and passed the theory and hazard perception tests followed by my first attempt at class C practical test, passed this in December 2013 and had decided to take 5 days training for ADR core, packages, tanks & seven classes. My first attempt in January 2014 at the C+E test and I made a complete hash of the reversing when nerves took over big time, so annoyed with myself I refused the rest of the test as I thought it pointless to return with the knowledge of an inevitable fail. Meanwhile I completed my Drivers CPC, registered with a few agencies and received my digital tachocard in readiness for that key aim of an HGV driving job.
Contacted a couple of local companies that needed HGV 2 drivers and asked to interview and an assessment drive. As a result I was offered a job driving 32 ton tippers, concrete mixers and they also have artics within their fleet of 50+. So I started driving on my HGV class C licence in February 2014 where I have received great help and training along with a fair rate per hour plus plenty of overtime in prospect.
Finally, along with my DQCPC, ADR Licence I can now add HGV Class C+E licence passing the test with only 2 minors and my examiner complimenting me on a confident, relaxing and professional drive. Those words “I am pleased to tell you, you have passed the test” and the great feeling that results from this success and the pinnacle of what I set out to achieve back in October 2013 is something I’ll never forget.
So it’s back to work on Monday, feet firmly on the ground with the news of my success to give to my employer.
In this journey of training to be a new HGV driver I wish to thank and firmly recommend the following who have helped me; Learn To Drive Me Ltd, Bristol and especially Mark Callaghan, an excellent instructor to whom I will always be grateful for all his patience, humour and psychology; WTTL, Devizes a great place where the classroom isn’t a bad place to be and Guy Jordan a new colleague for his superb on the job training. Last but not least my partner who has always been supportive and encouraged me all the way.
Now it’s the real learning as I gain experience daily whilst enjoying HGV driving for reward.
To all of you that are as I was back in October 2013; believe in yourself as it can be done with perseverance, dedication and good training that will bring you your own luck and ultimate SUCCESS in your aim to be an HGV driver.
