YES - a ‘B’ car licence - unless some numpty has made it weigh over 3.5 tonnes :exclamation:

Oh, and why is it a ‘stupid question’

Depends on the number of seats/passengers, you will need at least a D1 if it has more than 8. Some councils also require the driver to hold a Private Hire Drivers Licence, you need such a licence in Bedfordshire for example…

someone said to me years ago tht i need a pcv to drive

Apparently you can use a D1 restricted licence for this apparently, I think there is a certain time limit of a few hours I heard then you don’t need a D1 PCV part.

I think the seating arrangement is a PCV issue - if side facing seats then it is different to forward facing seats

I’ve never heard of that - it’s either a PCV or its not. Sounds like a MMTM!

You would need to give us more info. to get a comprehensive answer. If the limo is the property of Lord Snooty and you are his chauffeur then your car license is all that you need.If you are driving on hen nights etc.carry more than 8 passengers you need a D1 licence,I believe that those American jobs dont really comply with our legislation there are moves aoot to have them put of the road. So take care out there and mind your back.

cheers guys all it were tht i got asked to drive a limo for wedding but looks like i need to do my pcv thanks again

If you do it then there’s no ‘grey’ areas, so I think this would be a good option

Using the loophole, I suppose you could drive it if you werent paid to do it…

Do some limos require a taxi licence

If a limo has 8 or less passenger seats it can be driven on a car (cat b) licence but most councils require it to have a taxi licence- if it has more than 8 passenger seats YOU will need a D1/PCV licence to drive it plus it will also require a PCV mot and tacho(if over 3.5tonnes).

Be very careful as VOSA are clamping down on this type of vehicle

There used to be different rules if the seats were side facing and not forward facing - is this still the case

It’s the seating capacity that is the difference- don’t think that the seating arrangement has any bearing on it

Spot on correct it dosn’t matter which way the seats are facing.

But you do need to be aware of how your local council views them as there seems to be nothing uniform some require a private hire licence for the vehicle as well as the driver to hold a taxi licence.

I seem to remember 2 or 3 years ago a company spending near 200K plus buying the vehicle to get it through a PCV test.

Do some limos require a taxi licence

If the car is being used for public hire and reward it would ,if used for pre booked occasions then no it woud not.As taxis are regulated by local authorities there are going to be discrepancies in the advice given .Whats legal in one part of the country is not acceptable in another. There is no definite answer to the is it a bus or is it a car question.

There is depending on the number of seats- as posted above

Not paying the driver does not get round the hire or reward - its if the passengers are paying.
