Contribution based Employment Support Allowance which leads to Council and Housing Benefit, and increased Tax Credits if got kids.
Worth claiming for Disability Living Allowance as well depending on the severity of the effects and limitations the stroke has caused.

ESA can be claimed over the telephone straight away. You’ll get the number from typing ESA into Google.

BTW sorry to read this post. Hope he recovers fully and quickly.

Depends who he works for really if they are going to pay him his wage or SSP ( statutory sick pay ) they can do this for upto 29 weeks ( or they could ) although normally 26

Then he will have to apply for ESA which is £71 per week he may be able to claim DLA there are 2 rates of that low rate & high rate if he gets the high rate he will poss be able to claim motobility

But a lot depends on how bad the stroke is & what his Dr say

Should be entitled to Employment Support Allowance … used to be “Sick Pay” ( doesn’t now exist ) … presumably yor mate has medical certificate to say not fit to work ?
Also put in claim for housing benefit / Coucil tax Benefit. Get claim in ASAP … do it on-line ( I think  ) or over the phone.
I’m guessing G.P would be the one to ask advice on “driving” … not sure how it works regarding notifying DVLA ?
No doubt those with more experience of this will be along.

If your mate has got a citizens advice bureau near him, they will give him advice on benefits etc.Or look online at direct gov. As for getting back to work,it depends on if he can get his licence back and on how long it takes.Probably 12 months,as in the case of one of my mates. Its a case of proving to his own Doctor and the medical people at the DVLA that he’s fit again.
Best of luck to him and hope he gets his health and job sorted.

Hope your mate gets well soon…

As far as benefits go, a lot will depend on whether anybody else in his household earns wage, and if so, how much they earn.
I’m currently off sick and receive a grand total of £85.15 in SSP. I can’t get any benefit as I have a daughter in full time work, albeit at minimum wage… She is therefore expected to pick up the Rent Bill, Council Tax Bill etc etc. I also have a daughter in college who I support, but cant get any help towards that either.

So all I can say is…Best of luck to yer man…

A mini stroke or TIA means in most cases that he will lose his “vocational licence”
He is the best of to report immidiatly to the DVLA, for the reason that if he doesn’t report his doctor or specialist will report and it will take than 12 month from that date.
One of my drivers got a TIA a couple of years ago, he waited to long to report (he was of on the sick) and the whole malaky cost him 16 month before his license came back.
When he was healthy enough to work we employed him as a shunter until license came back.
Also you have to report it by law, you have signed for it when you requested your licence.

Dont count to much on DLA to get the highest rate I can asure you, dont feel the need for motability, they changed the whole regulation on that, you will need a lot of time and take a lot abuse to get anything (unless you belong to one of the minorities who actualy can be discriminated)

His best bet is to get a bit better first, and than talk to his employer if there are any posibilties, in the office, yard, warehouse or on a van.
If they are happy with him they may give him a opertunity.

However I have heard from another Haulier, that after a fatal accident with one of drivers, the phone never stopped with people applying.

I suffered a TIA and had to return home from Guernsey to Morayshire straight away, my car was at Portland so drove home and was told by my doctor that I had driven illegally after being thus diagnosed, my doctor was legally required to inform the DVLA who suspended my class 1 until my own doctor was satisfied I could reapply for it. DVLA arranged for me to go for a scan & 10 mins on the dreaded treadmill, like running up the side of Ben Nevis, luckily both were OK and my license was reinstated but for only three years at a time then its the treadmill again, and that bloody mountain gets steeper.
