They must have copied the basic principal for the Beverley Hills cop film…

On the one hand it’s all well and good whining about the Police “not doing anything about” diesel theft etc, but if you don’t volunteer information about an incident such as this when it does happen, how can they?
Roymondo, its ironic that you say this and you live in Daventry. I too have lived and worked there. I’ve long give up whining about diesel theft, infact i never even whined about it. But one thing sticks in my mind very clearly from Northamptonshire Police with regards to diesel theft, and that is the letters they sent out to companies when they spotted a lorry in a layby of a night, bear in mind i’m talking about a legally parked lorry. You know what they used to do ? They’d send your employer a letter ( i assume they searched the dvla database to find out who owned it or whatever) and the letter would say (not verbatim)…
Your lorry registered “abc 123 xyz” was seen at approx 01.45 am parked in a layby on the A43 at [insert nearest village], could you please inform your driver and all your other drivers that these laybys are not safe and are targetted by theft from vehicles and fuel theft, please find alternative safe parking".
These letters where often plastered around all the traffic offices in Daventry/DIRFT/Rugby at the time.
I knew from then on it was not something the police could deal with, instead they deterred you from stopping so you wouldn’t have to report a crime
And if we use this logic to stop the supposed epedemic of drink fuelled violence in city centres at the weekends, we could send a letter to tell everyone to stay at home?
So you still reckon its worth some one telling the cops there’s diesel syphoners working on the A43 ?
If i ever need a copper i’ll just make sure i mention “hate crime” due to my ■■■■■■■■■ or my race
Not only am I familiar with those letters, I was actively involved in that operation. On nights, we used to pro-actively patrol the A43, A45 and A14, logging details of all the trucks parked there (hence the letters) as well as stop/searching every plain white van we came across. If there was time (which there usually was not) we would expand our area of operation to cover some of the other trunk roads.
Far from it being “not something we could deal with” we generally had two or three arrests every set of nights, seized several vehicles that were being used for such thefts and recovered thousands of pounds worth of property. No diesel though.

Roymundo, like i said…don’t take me the wrong way. I’m not going to criticize you or what you did. There is like we know a finite resource, and if its a matter of fact that parking in secluded laybys in rural areas could be bad for you as a truck driver then so be it. You found no diesel thieves though?
I’m just casually asking this, and not nailing you down for an answer…given we know this in that area, what steps have been taken to provide alternative parking , even if not guaranteed as safe ? I can only count the parking that has gone, i’m not aware of any new parking over say the last 5 years?
Meanwhile the local councils promote the area for business as a central hub handy for rail, road and Motorway and a general great place to do business, the police are telling everyone not to park there as its not safe? The government say parking should be provided by way of co operation of stakeholders.
You say lorry drivers should ring in suspiscious looking vehicles. I say find a truck park, park in the middle and see nothing!!
Oh, we caught a few diesel thieves for sure - just didn’t recover any stolen diesel is all. Rather difficult to identify it, you see…

They all should of been using this…

Doesn’t make the stuff identifiable though. It’s a bit like folks marking their property by engraving their initials in a hidden location - only of any use if the cops know in advance that it has been marked (and what form the marking takes/where to find it).

I’m thinking you didn’t look at the link? The whole concept of the diesel dye has changed since that site and its products first came out .

Like Selecta DNA !
Yes, I looked at the link and no, it doesn’t help PC Plod at the roadside checking Jack The Lad in his van with a 50 litre drum of suspected stolen diesel with the task of identifying where that fuel has been stolen from. The stuff is evidently (they say so on their website) intended to deter commercial theft by making the fuel difficult to sell (Diesel Dye) or to assist in catching a dodgy employee “with his fingers in the till” (Covert Dye).
