if your going to milan,just stop in the services anywhere before and you can buy an equivilant to an a to z.
a lot of tight streets in milan be careful.

i think i might still have a map of milan knocking around somewhere but you could also try a online postcode or address finder etc.

Hitch if it is just road maps then the books are GREEN in colour and now must cost about 20€ they are divided up in to 3 books with the
NORTH; MIDDLE; SOUTHERN PARTS of ITALY these are the best i will see if i can find out the name ,but you have no problems buying them
at the motorway garages in ITALY

Be aware that any map may show the Milan Ring road as being 3 lanes, in each direction. Although this may be true, going by the lines painted on the tarmac, traffic forming 5 or 6 lanes is quite normal and that’s before they even start to use the hard shoulder.

we are going to stay in Soveco with my inlaws and will be just pottering about for a week i was going to order a street atlas b4 i went but will get one we we get somewhere near… I dont envisage too many problems with the Punto
I think the name of the decent mapmakers is IP although maps of Milan are plentiful.
I bought a big atlas, Atlant’e Stradale which covered everywhere I ever went to.
Ignore the Italian, Atlante Stradale probaly tastes better with bolognese sauce 
Stop at one of the services on the Milano Tang. (only these services do it) and get the blue book (blue bible) (Atlante topografico, Milano citta) it shows all Milano, its very expensive but is essential.
if driving during rush hour - fold in the mirrors.
it seems to be the only way to get through the traffic.
i thought about it myself but it could make life hard with a truck so didn’t bother.
the way the driving has gone in england in the past 5/10 yrs,italy is no worse.

with the exception of the fact that here in england everyone remains in the marked lanes (but as someone has already mentioned).
in italy they have their very own imaginary lanes, they are able to turn a 3 lane motorway into 5 or 6 lanes of traffic and a 4 lane motorway they manage an amazing 10 lanes of traffic.
most cars arrive new at the forecourt with “battle damage” and the mirrors folded in, they are sold on the basis of how loud the horn is.
if there is an accident on the m25 everyone slows down on both sides to have a look at it but in italy everyone looks as they drive towards it at full speed then they close their eyes as they weave their way through it, it’s really exciting to see, i used to love italy but i now find it’s just too far to be able to do every week and get home every weekend.
i think they are great drivers in italy,they never cease to amaze me.
its funny driving in italy,i always enjoyed it.

Just a quick warning… if you want to change lanes on an Italian motorway and a car or truck Flashes you out DONT CHANGE LANES 
Flashing headlights over there means " I am coming through " 
And they flasheven if you aren’t indicating to pull out, just to let you know they are there. Can get very annoyiong at night when your left mirror lights up every few seconds.

for a laugh when they flash you just indicate left and start pulling out…you get even more flashing then 
i worked the flashing thing out the hard way 
was pulling out the servicies back on to the autostrada, when an old iveco turbo started flashing me, cheers mate i thought and pulled out then with much blasting of airhorn i twiged
very nearly in the merde up to me neck but manged to out run the irrate italien

Been there, done that. Mainly to those ones that aren’t content with one flash.
