Here is my latest load out of Germany.
Nice one, you will find that all firms in Germany atleast will
be strict about load restrainant, as not only the driver but the
loading party also recives fines and points ,if the load is
not correctly secured, fines start at €50 and 1point and
then increase depending on the seriousness of the
offence committed,
With the amount of stuff that gets spilled in this country and our predilection for loading almost anything onto a flat trailer with no side restraints, maybe we could learn something from the Germans here.
Here is another site sorry only in german
but it does have some very good photos which
explain themselves quite well.
http://www.gefahrgut-guetertransport.de
if you click on the picture of the concrete pipes
it will change over to the site where various t
ypes of load restrainant are shown,
hello roscoe.it is me indeed.
some people are afraid of my lack of load security.
i been at this job all my life and never lost anything off the side of a trailer yet.
been running up and down to italy for the last 8 weeks with tautliners.i have loads of straps.
they are left in the locker.
no need to use them.
having said that,no need to speed around roundabouts either.
30 yrs using tilts and tautliners and nothing ever came out the side.
its the good driver you see.
greg50:
its the good driver you see.
does being a good driver prevent others from cutting you off etc and mechanical failures as well?
as we all know
every load is different.i will strap if i think its required.not shrunk wrap pallets and ibcs.these dont move.
machinery and lathes i will strap.
i remember many years ago in bordeaux, there was a roundabout at the end of the autoroute.i went around it and there was a germen truck[ironic],the sheet was torn on the tilt and the lathe was on the road.i know its not funny and i did pity the driver, but i laughed to myself.i suppose it could happen to any of us.
i had my own truck many years ago,i remember in ireland bringing a load of auto glass to a factory in waterford from dublin.in waterford they never asked me but decided i was bringing a crate of windscreens to dublin airport for the new f7 volve being assembled in scotland.
they gave me 20 pound at the time.
put the crate in the back of the box, pallets to support it and away with me to the airport.
when i got there the crate and the pallets had fell over and there was broken windscreens all the way to the front of the box.
the cargo super came out with his camera,i said, you are wasting your time.i am putting the lot in the skip.
i explained that the job was not an official one.i needed no signature.
he helped me put them in the skip.
the old pandoro boxes were not equipped for this type of work.you couldnt secure loose cargo in them.
greg50:
as we all know
every load is different.
I couldn’t agree more greg50, but that doesn’t alter the fact that German law [StVO §22(1) ] requires loads to be secured.
You can choose to ignore it, that’s entirely your choice, but if you get stop-checked or there’s some kind of accident, you might get fined.
BTW, according to BKatV, the basic fine for a truck or bus (professional) driver failing to secure a load appears to be €50, but if there’s endangerment it’s increased to €75. It could be more, depending on the exact circumstances.
greg50:
i will strap if i think its required.not shrunk wrap pallets and ibcs.these dont move.
That might be where you and the law have a potential conflict, because it doesn’t say: if in the driver’s opinion…etc
As for IBCs (if they contain dangerous goods) that’s a different matter.
As I said above, it’s a specific ADR offence (in over 40 countries) to fail to secure them. (ADR 7.5.7.1)
A small point here is that an IBC can weigh up to 3,000kgs
greg50:
i suppose it could happen to any of us.
I agree 101% with you there greg50, and I hope the above helps you in your choice
Paderborn. Yesterday.
The Polizei suspect that the load was not correctly secured or the driver may have been a little too enthusiastic with the right boot when cornering.
Gerraway
Guy hadn’t even got 5 klicks from the brewery…
Food for thought, methinks…
A nice photo, one point to mention is that the germans have bought
in a system of standrds that trailers have to reach before they can
be certified as safe to carry certain goods and this goes for all trailers
how ever if the driver does not drive correctly then even the best system in the world can go ape, if you look back there is a postabout a system from
Australia which looks to be a VERY SAFE system, goes under the name of
kruger–http://www.krueger.com.au
you need to look at the news and developments, but the whole site
is very intresting,as it shows how the load saftey aspect is approached down under, the system is called slide-gate.
I tried to think of a comment to add to brit pete and Inselaffe’s for this, but it seems to speak for itself…
I’d like to know the outcome for the driver and his/her boss though…
To quote a yet to be born Scottish gentleman: “Ye cannae change the laws of physics, Jim”
If a load ain’t suitably strapped down or restrained in some other manner, it will go pear shaped one day
That Newton fellow and his pesky “Laws of Motion”
I think it was Brit Pete who posted this link a while ago: klsk.info/inhalt.htm

I was fined 320 Euros for doubling up ADR. Two pallets of 45 gal drums 8 on two pallets shrink wrapped and strapped with 6 ratchets. The rest of the load was 45 gal drums of concentrate orange juice sat on deck no pallets and not strapped.
My German is crap but I think this says I had no sideboards which I had. I had not strapped the load which I had.
Can anyone translate.
I have not paid the kroutenkuntzkopfs however.
first off as regards not paying the fine when you next
get stopped by the police in germany and they check
their records, you will either find yourself asked to
pay a set amount of euros which may end up being double
or even four times the amount you was fined at first
pay the fine, The second option that the police might
take is to arrest you for non payment of your fine
as for your little note it states that the wrong
method of load restraint was used, plus you
should have asked how the load was to be
restrained correctly,As that IS your
responsibility.;
You will not get away with a small fine the next time
when checked as they have you in the computor
bank ,and repeat offenders get a stiffer fine handed
out,
try haveing a look at the useful links post
as there are some sites posted,
any problems i can all ways
dig a few german ones out,

Reading this thread makes me glad to drive in the UK.Can you smoke in lorries in Germany?
I would guess at no. Please put me out of my misery somebody and tell me you can, legally. In Germany you can smoke in trucks, service areas, truck stops, bars, cafes, in fact pretty much anywhere.
You can smoke in the cafe at a cancer hospital in Essen!
Inselaffe:

Last time I was in Germany people were amazed when I told them I drove a flatbed lorry stacked up with timber. None of them were drivers themselves, just family friends but the idea of a lorry like that was kinda strange to them.
brit pete:
you will either find yourself asked to
…beind double
,
I really do hope you meant being, Pete, not bend.
Cant speak for the German’s, but i load 18 pallets(Mix of pallets and IBC’s- Non Haz) out of Shell Specialist Chemicals in Bern on Wednesday, and the bloke was adamant that every pallet needed strapping. And they helped me do it, They too pictures and all sorts after it was done. They re-arranged the boards in the trailer to make sure it was 100% up to standard.
I then loaded a further 8 IBC’s in Grenzach Yesterday, and they didnt say a word about strapping it or securing it. All i did was put my two Span Lock bars across between the boards and they were happy(well they didnt moan put it that way)
Thanks Spardo,
Sorry less haste and think before engageing brain
i will edit it now,
@andyroo if you are checked and found to have a insecure load
then not only you but the person who has loaded you gets fined
as well,
these Span lock-bars are not a reconised load-restraint,
you needed a mixture of anti-skid matting plus with straps,
TRY LOOKING THROUGH this one I
have put it at the place you need to read well worth a look
Hope this helps,
Brit Pete, I think the criteria layed out in that link renders at least 99% of UK trilers unsuitable, at best.
