This is a new one on me. Stopped for my break around 130 this morning in a set back lay by on the A51 near to Lichfield. I normally have a kip and draw the curtains. After a bout 10 mins I am disturbed. Looked through the curtains to see a 52 plate transit pickup with mesh greedy boards about 30 or so foot in front of me with 2 individuals nicking straps off the flatbed parked in front of me. They had about 5 or 6 threw them in the back of their truck and off they went.
I noted there reg number and phoned the old bill. They said someone would be along shortly. I gave the reg no of the lorry they had stolen from also. When I got out to check they had completely unstraped 4 packs of timber . I knocked on the drivers cab but no answer. It was a fairly local firm so perhaps he had sneaked home on a dodhy night out (curtains were closed)left a note for the driver and popped it behind his wiper. Don’t know if plod bothered to turn up that is I had another 25 mins of break to have and when I left there was no sign .
Hope he checks his load or else it could be nasty. Hope it’s no one on here. How much do black market straps and ratchets go for? Not a bad earner for the scumbags if they get about 20 or so a night
On one of my first trips down the road after passing my test, I loaded scaffolding out of Coventry for Aberdeen, got as far as ■■■■■■■■■■■ and parked in a layby, got up in the morning to find that someone had nicked my 6 straps and ratchets of the load but then tied it all back down again with rope, never felt a thing lol
It’s not a new phenomenon, many years ago I left a load of wide plate parked in the layby just around the corner from where I lived. This was in the days when we all took our motors home, I had checked the load on Sunday evening ready for an early start. Monday morning at 0600 all the chains plus the wide load marker lights fastened to them were gone. Not a good start to the week!! Dirty bloody trick eh? Regards Kev.
