Strange convoy m42 today

Own Account Driver:

How many cars do you reckon you could fit on that rig?

Muckaway:

Suedehead:
Think they used to go to the"top secret base" which is signed as “works unit only” between Jcts 14 & 13.

That would be RAF Welford. (am I allowed to name it as I’ve not signed the Official Secrets Act? Not that secret if you drive along the A338 or the Newbury Road over the Ridgeway out of Wantage, as there are several signposts for it.
Talking of armed convoys, what about the ancient blue Seddon Atkinson that used to do weapons transfer from Bicester garrison to RAF Brize Norton?

This one?

Prob off to NI to try keep the peace with the Knuckle draggers

Own Account Driver:

Just seems a bit OTT, what was on the single cab pick up seemed fine  presumably (and I speak as no expert), only one bloke can get through a doorway or window at a time, so why the massive link span and beefy decking?

All the gear, no idea… :smiling_imp:

Average man is 160lb, body armour ammunition, grenades, knife, weapon, pistol, clothing and boots will probably add another 40-50lb. Then whilst only one can fit through the door you want the next to come through and back up the first as quick as! and so on til the team is in. So thats 4 to 6 200lb+ men in front of the pivot point. That’s half a tonne at least, up high. Yep needs to be pretty strong!

Understood but the first set-up seems to be coping fine. The second rig seems to be able to take 2-3 tonne! Just seems a little over the top. And why is it so wide?

So They can enter two windows not one I’m guessing

Saaamon:
Surely one for the ex sas drivers on here could tell us what this is all about?

It’s the ‘Boat House’ decorating team. The police ■■■■■■ is to stop some tea-leaf lifting the sheets and discovering the colour.

And no I wasn’t one of them, but there’s a bloke in every pub in England will confirm the aforementioned facts, and if you buy him a pint - he might even tell you the colour of the boat house.

Seen them on the m5

For some reason I kinda imagine the same thing happening to that as the LAPD’s armoured vehicle in Die Hard.

The first one is very low, only suitable for small private jets and low balconies. The second is more adjustable and pivots so requires more strength.

The width is solely for speed. The quickest way in is to split the team to both sides. Then say right hand man goes first swiftly followed by the man on the left. As the 1st right hand man goes in the 2nd right hand man can move up and get ready whilst the left hand man is going in, and so on. The width is so the team is out of the line of fire lined up flat against the aircraft/wall etc.

Just curious as I have not seen anything like this before a large convoy of police bikes and plain white vans with blue flashing lights seemed to be escorting 3 or 4 American type large vans on uk plates with huge bull bars all of these were black and towing black trailers. Never seen anything like it before

Spotted this again yesterday guys, 2 yank canvas backed pickups towing canvas covered trailers, several plain white vans with blues where the headlight are and numerous police bikes and traffic cars. Belting it down the m42 east towards the m40 with a rolling road block to the rear.

Any ideas■■?

They is just going camping.

Dave Humphries:
Mystified me, too … Caught this leaving Trowell M1.

Surprised no ones said about the quality of the sheeting, or the straps over the top of the sheet.

One had ADR + Explosive plates out and was 5 plain sprinter vans with blue lights, 2 police car Volvo’s (signed)
and 3 bikes plus one plain Mercedes truck,

Also 3 - 4 black coloured vehicles as above.

There was also 2 110’s plain dark blue with satellite equipment following the convoy in the fast lane. Not sure if connected mind due, but seemed to be.

Spotted this lot on the M18 the other night about 40 vehicle strong

Thats strange.
I originally came up with SAS activity given the location, M5, M42 etc. But the M18?
I know that nuclear convoys run 2 routes between AWE and Coulport, either east or west UK. West is M40 M42 M6 East I’m unsure of… I wonder if this is connected given the force protection etc. No signs or mention of radioactive plates though.

Didn’t see the pick-ups but did see plain Mercedes Vitos - I think (smaller than Sprinters anyways) in Bawtry x 2, silver-coloured with blue lights flashing in grille & rear clusters. Would’ve been Tuesday or Wednesday evening.
Wondered what/who they were■■?
