They can get close i.use 3 on my daf god.knows how close 1 would get you.
Saying that though I’d never trust it that close anyway.

Its not actually that close, still keeps you a safe enough distance.

Just as a matter of interes3t what do you class as a “safe enough distance”?

Just curious

That’s the whole point, it doesn’t need to be what you or I would call a ‘safe enough distance’ the ■■■■ truck is doing all the thinking (and stopping) for them.

Rowley010:
Nah he was far far far closer than what any adaptive cruise control system would allow him to be

I’m always surprised at how close these systems let a truck get. On the rare occasions I use mine I set it for a larger gap than standard, I’ve never set it for a smaller gap, but imagine that would be very close indeed.
I have no intention of trying the closest setting to prove that point!

Yes I am horrified at the lack of distance but I am even more horrified how some think it is safe to travel at these distances.

Will it ever sink in that the two second rule in as absolute minimum distance for an alert car driver and has nothing to do with a truck.

Know the score and make it four (minimum) and then innocent people may not get wiped out so often.

Yeah but I bet the muppet that programmed the device has never driven a truck or has no idea about road safety.

OVER RIDE
OVER RIDE

I have to say threads about paddies doing 101 on the autobahn or Cainryan to Dover in 6 hours are just a little more entertaining than this one, where have they gone?

That was me. I was cooking my dinner and watching tv.

I just leave the auto brake and crash avoidance system on when im doing that. Next time il fly past you if my eggs are ready in time.

Dangerous behaviour.
Eggs are high in cholesterol.

Are you communicating from 1989? It’s long been accepted that eggs have many more positives for us than negatives.

Never had this happen with a truck but happens with cars a fair bit. Being tailgated really annoys me, one of only things that does, so like you do best to get rid of them even to the extent of going through services or over junctions if they just won’t f off

ValleysTrucker:
On our Merc’s there is 5 different settings to keep a set gap between car in front, sure it’s company policy that you don’t set it less than 3. If your in an accident and that’s changed I guess it’s up the road.

Are you allowed to think, or is that against company policy.

We don’t get paid enough to think

And there’s nothing in my contract that says I have to think either

It was written in The Sunday Sport in 1975 that someone, somewhere, said something about eggs being bad for some people, sometimes. And they have worn a white sciency smock, and had a doctorate degree bought from a correspondence college.
Now you prove to me that eating a hundred eggs a day won’t do me harm, or else I’ll pose the Missouri question to you!

how many cars can you get in a 4 second gap at 08.00

Going for top slot on the microlise scoreboard, slip streaming.

Seriously though i dunno what goes on in their heads, ‘cos i drive a big juggernaut i’ll be safe in the event i can’t stop’ :unamused: , have they ever seen, i wonder, the effects on the cab when the weight of the loaded trailer behind comes into play when a wagon rams another up the arse, fortunately they were tailgating you and not a family off on their hols in their car, so if it had gone pear shaped the right person would be the one to suffer the consequences.
When i’ve picked up a plank on the motorway, i too just slip off at a junction or into the services for a few seconds so they go by, the last thing to do is antagonise them in any way.

Wouldn’t be surprised if its a day driver who’s switched to nights and discovered its not quite that simple for the first few days, thus falling asleep.

End up following the truck in front as a comfort blanket, and every so often realise they are a bit close. In that case the auto follow cruise control might have saved an accident (until you had to stop).

As for night drivers thinking, if we half woke up, the Tuffnells trucks would scare us all off the roads! But can foresee us all lining up behind Reef as our big brother, sticking tounges out at Blue Estate then darting back. :smiling_imp:

were you proper sweating ? mind racing this guys gonna kill me along this stretch /did you laugh out loud after he pulled off . i find laughing out loud defuses me

Rowley010:
Coming down the M6 tonight, at about Wigan another artic catches me up and sits a reasonable distance behind. I’m doing 52mph. Every so often he gets really close then backs off agiain. Why not just go past me?

This goes on and on past Lymm then after J19 where it’s 4 lanes he goes so close it feels dangerous if I’d needed to brake. I put hazards on for a few seconds to try and give him a hint as I didn’t want to touch brakes, he didn’t react. I speed up to 55mph and he comes with me. Slow back down and he stays with me very very close.

I slow all the way down to 45mph to give him ample head room to quickly get past but nope he just stays dangerously close to me.

This is a quiet motorway by the way at 1am so all lanes free.

Eventually he leaves at 17 I think it was.

Just seemed a bit strange to be like that behind me for a good 20 miles.

If you was gawping in your mirrors for 20 miles, you’d probably be more of a hazard to what’s going on!

Don’t know what you’re all fussed about, if he rams you up the arse it’s him that’s gonna come off worst.
I’d be inclined to hit the exhaust brake (no brake lights) just to help him along…that would sure as hell make him back off a bit.
(If not refer to my first paragraph. :grimacing: )

BIG +1

I doubt that pal, it’s nice to hear of a driver that actually checks his behind regularly.

You might be in for a surprise, making assumptions like that…

Quite possibly.

What I class as safe and what the truck deem safe are two very different things.

Don’t be ridiculous man… Think?
What decade are you in ffs? :unamused:
It’s all spoon feed management, electronic gizmo ■■■■■■■■, and truck sat navs set to heights, weights and every [zb] thing else nowadays.
Do try and keep up.
