Straight from the horses mouth

I attended a VOSA seminar Thursday evening in Crawley and the traffic commisioner gave a talk on the various things that his people do and how they are totally independant not answerable to any minister or goverment body?

One of the points was that in the near future on the spot fines will be introduced for all HGV and PSV drivers who are stopped and found to be running illegal. This will be law in the very near future and the main reason for the act is to target the foreign vehicles that “get away with it”

The evening was very informative and I must say I learnt quite a bit about the organisations and the way in which they can help not hinder.

Better start carrying a few grand in the cab then eh?.

I bet the companies don’t pay these fines. Slightest little thing wrong with the vehicle, then I’ll refuse to take it out .

The wonders of modern technollogy , In my day the just used the handle of a spoon & gave you a frontal labotomy .

Oh I do appologise I got confused thats what they do to get you to want to be an O/D

I knew I would get some stick about brain washing etc. but the people there were a great help about all sorts of things which I wanted to clarify. We all know how difficult it is to keep legal and how easy it is to be dodgy without realising it.

Still the coffee was good

i think you will find that the companies do pay these fines, the penalty for not paying the fine is the immediate arrest of the vehicle and it’s cargo, the driver will remain free to go about his or her business minus a set of big wheels.
it will initially fall to the driver to pay any fines but if they do not have the finances then they will be allowed to choose either to remain with the vehicle until the payment of the fine is received from other sources or to leave the vehicle and make their own way on foot or to a hotel or whatever.
of course if the driver has been a naughty boy/girl without the companies knowledge then the company will expect to be recompensed the fine via the drivers wage packet so don’t sign any documents allowing your employer access to your wages, not even for workwear or telephone use as this will constitute an agreement for reimbursement of additional costs placed on the company by you or your actions.

…and after a brief “conversation” told them I didn’t want to work for them again…

…I’ve worked for Hays before and had an erm “disagreement” with them about a run I was asked to do so that’s out (burnt bridges and all that)…
