About two weeks ago I made a first delivery to the place that seems to become our regular customer. An old building in the centre of middle-size town, double yellow lines with no loading everywhere around, small car park in the back.
I just drove into the car park (it was tight, but I made it first time), even managed to turn around my van there and then borrowed the barrow from the place and wheeled the stuff in through the back doors (its quite a big drop - I had 40 something boxes).
Today my office calls me “Orys, you were doing that delivery to X two weeks ago?”
“Yes, I did it”
“How did you unloaded the stuff?”
“I just entered the stuff car park (gave them all directions etc)”
“Ah, thank you”
10 minutes later another call:
“What van you were driving that day?”
“Just a standard sprinter”
“Ah, thank you”
20 minutes later, another phone call. This time from one of drivers:
“What the ■■■■! This place is outrageus! ■■■■■■■ morons from the office send us there! Its impossible to get into this car park! You are talking ■■■■■■■■! We all should stick together and tell that office idiots that we wont do it, because it is impossible to get there and you ■■■■■■■ know this! But you choosen to feed them with what these morons want to hear, with that crap that you can enter this ■■■■■■■ car park! No, I tried several times, its impossible! Do what you want, I am telling them I am not doing this ■■■■■■■ job any more! ■■■■■■■ idiots everywhere! I have to park on these yellow lines, X who was doing that last week also had to park on the pavement! I am not paying the ■■■■■■■ fine if I get caught!”
Should I feel guilty that I had no problem to enter the van there?
Or… Do you think the problem lies in that there are boxes to be handballed and thats why they are not happy?
Had a driver working with me a few years ago who would take his truck into obvious no-go places with similar results.
In fairness to you, it seems that you did it without doing silly things, whereas my colleague would drop a trailer, release the brakes and nudge it under a low entrance at one drop.
Hard to say why your colleagues are unhappy, unless you went on a very good day etc and it is not normally like that.
But it does sound like its one of those drops where just because you have done it once it doesn’t mean you could do it again. Could be completely different everytime you go there, cars parked in different places etc
I would explain this to the office as it sounds like you just told them it was hunky dorey when it’s clearly not.
The other driver sounds like a right ■■■■■ though.
This is how the situation looked when I was there. It was a bit tight, but driving a sprinter van forwards into the red bareers on the right was not a problem. If the cars were parked closer to the entrance, I would just reverse the van into the entrance to the car park - the short side road is wide enough to give me some swing of the front even if cars are parked on both sides…
Its not about who’s better driver, I think the whole situation is silly, as I got the feeling from the guy who called and shouted at me that I am in the position where office staff puts me against the other drivers… Or they themselves see me as an obstruction to get rid of this not liked drop…
The other driver does seem to be a bit of a numpty, but i bet the office are also partly to blame, instead of the Office getting him to call Orys straight away so Orys can tell him how to get in there i suspect the office bods have just told the driver its accessable without explaining how.
There was this new site i did where it was a drop trailer (drawbar load), but you could drop the trailer on site so you wouldnt have far to tranship. I explained this to the office but instead of telling the next driver going there to call me to get the details they just told him that you didnt have to the drop the trailer, he tried to get where they wanted the blocks with the trailer still attached and promptly got stuck

Well, when they firstly called me, I heard them repeating that to someone, I guess they had him on other line…
Then (it’s my guess) he claimed that it is impossible, so they called me to ask what van I had when I was there…
And then he just called me to let the steam of after he handballed all these boxes from around the corner when he parked on double yellow line, I guess…

i have to say it but i dont understand the point of what you’re going on about , surely if you can get into a place you will and if you can’t you won’t have i missed something here ?
it looks to me like you’re bigging yourself up by making out you’re the only man for the job and everyone else is useless .
get over yourself you’re a van driver ffs i know complete knobheads that do that and i cant believe you have office staff who have the time to make several pointless phone calls about if you got into a random yard or not …

My point was that I felt strange as put in opposition to other drivers… Thats all, nothing big. That’s why I called this thread silly situation (ah, actually I called it stilly, spelling mistake )

if that happened orys you need to change jobs , no way would my boss or any member of our office staff get into any conversation about access problems if one driver does one thing one way and another can’t ( for whatever reason ) he’d leave it up to us as to decide if we go in or not . and believe me thats happened more than once and customers told its our decision and not his .
you should have told your boss you’re not getting involved in things you can’t see and just because you got in doe’snt mean everyone else can . my bosses wouldnt even have made the phone call/calls .

^^+1
…configuration of parked cars may have changed
…there may be new obstacles/road works erected since last time
…the vehicles - although same model - may have different wheelbase lengths/bodywork dimensions

[zb] em, you did what you get paid to do… Just cause some bone idle sht couldn’t be arsed carrying stuff…
I agree with above statement …and I noticed the grief the orys is getting and I think ‘why’…just cos he managed and some numpty couldent do it …so what did mr numps do …yes …thats right…he cried to the boss and tried to stab the man in the back…
