no offence mate but tax issue aside i dont fancy being on the road with some one who drives part time and works in an office and is suddemly let loose with something approaching 80 tons gross
Are you sure as i work rest and play with traction engines and there is no engine in the world that is 56 tonnes the heaviest left in preservation is a fowler Z7 ploughing engine and they are only nudging 30 tonnes
As someone who has gone up the road at ridiculous weights with Allelys, 80 tonnes is not that heavy but if you are not a regular driver then please leave it to someone else and that is not meant to be patronising

Is it from Preston steam services ?
not being patronising either but don’t some of these road planing men only drive part time?
tim next door drives a 29 tonne jcb and has just got his class one to move it
I work in an office and do some part time HGV driving.
One of my colleagues came to me the other day and asked if I could do a driving job for him.
I has bought a 56 tonne traction engine from Kent and it needs to be moved back to Yorkshire.
I can borrow a Scania 3 axle unit which is taxed as PLG and a matching trailer for the job.
As this load will be a STGO can a unit plated as PLG do the work?
Pete
In order to be taxed PLG, the maximum gross weight of the Scanny will be 7.5 tonnes so even putting a full ■■■ packet on the back could see it exceeding maximum weight.
However if it is taxed as a Private HGV, which it most likely is, then it IS taxed correctly to do this as a non-commercial personal hobby job however the plated weight on the tractor unit would have to be in excess of 80 tonnes (a flatbed to pull this will weigh about 20 tonnes alone) and a standard 3 axle unit is not going to be plated for 80 tonnes and won’t be capable of without some major work on suspension, steering and brakes. I once had a 3 axle Leyland Roadtrain which was plated for 60 tonnes and everything was built beyond belief compared to the standard ones and it’d pull up 38 tonnes on a 1p peice.
Also as it is STGO you need to inform the councils and local police authorities, filling in appropriate forms and get given a route plus requirements on any convoy escorting.
