Stewart Cameron vs Martin Oliver?

Just wondered if i could jog any memories, my dad used to drive for Stewart Cameron and told me a story years ago of how these two firms both ran red lorrys with a white stripe. Anyway they aparrantly used to have stickers on the old f88s with “the MAN eaters” on them, and the Martin oliver MANs had “the Volvo munchers” on them. Sounds a bit of a laugh, but is there any truth in it or was he having me on?.

I worked for Stewart Cameron for a few years in the early 70,s on night trunk from Moffat to Hesketh Bank or Widnes change trailers and back to Moffat. I think your dad was winding you up as there was nothing like that on the trucks. The F88,s just came out new at the time I was working there, Archie Kirkwood had one, Jimmy Watson from Crawford had one I think the Joker had one but cannot be certain. Hughie steel and the 3 trunk men from Moffat all had new Seddon Atki,s. There were a few more F88,s but I cannot remember who had them. Hope this is of some help to you, regards Bob.

Was Stewart Cameron’s Widnes depot near the river bridge, close to West Bank Dock estate Bob?

Christopher once again you are right, it was in the old railway station. Camerons main work out of Widnes was the asbestos made my Turners, we used to run containers of whisky to Widnes for onward transmission to Southampton. Invariably we brought asbestos back up for the Holyland, appen.

Jimmy McMinn was working at Hunters the last time I saw him - but that was in 2005, when he was handing out the packed lunches from the back of his trailer at the end of the Trans-Pennine run at Harrogate. He worked with my dad at Thos Guy’s at Burscough too.

When Stewart Cameron went out of business in the mid 80’s Martin Oliver only had a very small fleet probably 6 lorries mainly Volvos!
