Steering Aid (Third hand?)

Hi All

First of all this isn’t a debate about who likes using the steering aid or not, I need it for medical reasons. The point of the post was that I’m in and out of a lot of different trucks and I was wondering if there was any heavy duty/quick release clips for these ‘third hands’? I’m talking about something like a very heavy duty crocodile-like clamp in the shape of the wheel and I say heavy duty so it doesn’t move or slide. It just gets a bit of a pain in the ■■■ to carry a pair of pliers and having to unscrew and tighted a bolt every shift.
Regards

Have you tried carrying a small ratchet with a (I think) 13m socket on? Or a ratchet spanner?

Yes but it’s finding one with the socket long enough to clear the rest of it… but you have just gave me an idea of somewhere else to look for one. :sunglasses:

Halford sell them as separates, long sockets and extentions

It will be certainly a pain using pliers and you will eventually round the nuts off. A short open end spanner would be the easiest to carry and easy to use or a mini box spanner with bar.

Put a wing nut on it - if you must but not it’s warranted unless you’re genuinely invalided in which case the whole truck needs properly modifying.

What about the quick release nuts that they have on push bike wheels? They use a snail cam to clamp tight.

Don’t play with yourself when your driving and that’ll free up an extra hand

Are your employers aware of your medical condition?

There’s a driver shortage, haven’t you heard, they can’t send everyone with cab-tat-itis off on the sick.

Seriously though. If you’ve got a genuine medical condition, surely they have a duty of care?

Seems to manage ok in the videos hes put on utube

The last video I put on YouTube where my hands can be seen was probably a good 2 years ago. It’s not a severe medical condition, and certainly not one to warrant the company to have to make adaptations for me. It just makes life a little bit easier with a third hand.

I know you don’t want a debate on the rights and wrongs of a steering wheel knob but if you’re going to use one on different lorries and clamp it tight enough so it won’t slip you really should consider the potential for damage, perhaps wrapping some none slip material round the steering wheel before putting the knob on may help to prevent damage to the steering wheel.

You can get stuff like this very cheap.

I’ve no idea if it would work or not it’s just a suggestion
