Staying loyal to one truck marque

Saw one of Murray Hoggs today and it got me wondering if they have always run Mercs ?

Tends to be more about staying loyal to dealers and salesman that you feel treat you fairly. Not unusual to find a sales guy moves from say Scania to Merc and takes a lot of his customers with him.

Obviously goes without saying there are plenty folk who’d buy a turd strapped to a rollerskate if it had a Scania badge on it.

As far back as I can remember they were all mercs, I know my father used to drive an old y reg when I was at school and that wasn’t new at the time but before then I couldn’t say.

I agree with the scania sentiment. They’ve had their day wearing top crown through pure reputation. Trucks are only big cars. Would you buy the same car all your life? If you started to get frustrated by maintenance costs or poor dealer handling/fuel burn its time to explore new avenues. For example, not to live in but the best truck to work and drive I found was the Renault premium. The daf had an unforgivable bad turning circle and crap distorted mirrors. The merc had loads of room but was awful to drive.

Murray hogg run a few volvos too.

We’re loyal to Daf, CF rigids and one XF artic. We’ve contract hired Volvo FMs which a few of us felt were better but management seemed to just order “more of the same.”
I think you should run a mixed fleet to compare costs and customer service.

Well, that has dampened my fireworks display.

When I started at Millars we had a 100% MAN fleet.
But the sevice went right down hill, so we swapped to DAF, but then got a better deal with Merc.
We’re now 100% Merc.
If the boss thinks it’s necessary, we’ll swap to another marque but we seem pretty settled on Merc for now.
I don’t have a problem with that. The drivers seat takes a bit of setting up, but once you get it just right it’s fine. They drive well enough, driving comfort is ok, plenty of room, comfy bed, decent enough spec (built in fridge, air con).

Its not a axor then,

When I first started with my current company we was 100% scania, dealler gave us great service, till we asked for a demo unit, (running 20+ scanias) messed boss about for two months, Just by chance merc salesman walks in the door, demo there in two days, result now almost all merc (he got 6 dafs at silly money)
Short version is trust in the salesman and decent service

I work for a large faceless conglomerate so it’s not about the marque, it’s about the bottom line. Indeed if the price was right I have no doubt we’d be driving the aforementioned turds strapped to rollerskates!
