So I have been offered a full time employed class 1 job with the Royal Mail.
I know the hours salary and shift premiums. The problem I have is that I have it
Really good where I am at now. I have no problems and good rota (4 nights a week).
We are currently on inflated rates touted as a trial.
The problem I have is that am not sure in the rota for the Royal Mail I know
I will start on the reserve rota.
Do I stay where I am coz I have no problems or do I jump ship and give the Royal Mail a go
.
Both have there pros and cons which is making it a difficult decision to make.
Any advice or inside info would be appreciated can PM me if wish to remain private.

I would stay where you are RobK or ADHDFML, or whichever username you choose this week.
I am actually neither of those users. If you check my only other topic you will see I introduced myself. I have only this account and mod can check that. Been lurking around this forum for years and it’s replies like this why I took so long to register.

Of course it’s not you Rob!
You really need a new modus operandi, how long before I’m added to your foe list?
You have it good where you are and appear happy and content with the pay work and shift pattern.
You already know the answer.
TBH RM would be the last place i’d work, they seem to live on the limiter and are pushing constantly to get ahead, yes some other drivers also behave like this but i don’t see it quite so uniformly as you see with RM’s drivers, are they that pushed to the second, sod that for a game.
If your on reserve duties it means will basically be covering anything and everything. Good variety of work but the start finishl times will be all over the place
I know ultimately it will be me who has to make the decision.
I am happy with the pay and rota at my current job
But the RM is same money basic for less hours much better T&C’s
As for the reserve rota I stated at my interview that I am only interested in night shifts
And the guy at the interview assured me that wouldn’t be a problem as that is what
Most of there reserve rota is made up of.
I am in good terms with my current employer and would like to think I would be able to go back if I am honest and open with them.
Wifes going to be off for a year shortly as were due a baby next month so that would give me a year to get a duty rota.
Are you really happy at your current place? I get the shifts, money all work for you but what did RM have that tempted you to apply? I suspect there may be something at your current place that you’re not happy with which is why you applied. If you fancied something different you should probably go to RM you can try going back but I’ve never gone back to a previous employer as the reasons for leaving are usually still in place, but that is just my take on things.

I would seriously put job security at the top of the list especially with a baby on the way, i have no idea what RM are like to work for but i know a couple of lads in our local depot that have been there for donkeys years and i doubt they will be going anywhere soon.
For my tuppence worth RM hardly ever advertise for drivers directly on the books it’s usually through an agency like pertemps, if you don’t take the job you will always wonder if you made the right decision, leave your current employer on good terms just in case, I’d take the RM job and not look back.
Good luck whatever you decide and congrats on the baby
A few of you have echoed my thought process which is making it a difficult decision.
I am happy in my current job, and said I would only ever leave for an upwards step not a sideways step. Like stated you don’t often see RM jobs direct which is why I applied. I didn’t actually expect to be offered a position.
I work for a 3PL on supermarket work Where as RM is direct and with the baby coming next month I am Thinking long term, better pension and benefits etc. When I went for my assessment and interview I was asking as many people as I could how long have you been here and it’s 30 + for most of them. Plus it’s less hours for the same money. Same travel time same distance to both of them.
The only thing holding me back is i currently do 4 days a week and don’t really want to do 5. I asked how days a week it was and as I will be starting on a reserve rota it will vary week to week. Could be 3/4/5 all depending what duty I am on for the week apparently.
Thanks for the replies as it shows people are thinking the same as me.
It should be pretty easy to pick up a four day rota.
You don’t say which depot you could be working from but i know RM are not able to cover all duties at the moment in Bristol. They are just reorganising duties so some Bristol runs will be moved to other depots…
It’s worth taking a punt on RM just for the pension if your young enough to make it count??
