I work for a road maintenance company and mostly drive rigids and sometimes a 12tonner with a trailer but the work is quite heavy at times. The hours are ok but the conditions are getting worse all the time. The big question is do I bite the bullet and do class 1 with an agency and hope I get a full-time job out of it or stay safe where I am? I have had my class 1 for almost 3 years so the insurance thing shouldn’t be an issue but i am 45 in two months and have heard horror stories about delays in getting licence back but hopefully that wont hold things up if I do jump ship.
Any opinions and advice much appreciated.
I would hang fire on quitting the job you have now to do agency work for a couple of months. Have you tested the water yet sending your CV to any full time job adverts?
I have had my class 2 for 27 years, and recently been thinking about a class 1, but at 50 years old this year and happy with my job and pay I gave up on the thought. Then the company i work for told me yyesterday they would like to put me through my class 1 this year if that was okay with me as we may just need a bugger wagon, crack on, was my reply

Not sure I fancy working for your company much. Would that be where they send the drivers for “additional training”?

Yes, working for this place could end up just one long pain in the A.

A few companies I have driven for have a fleet of them. The drivers are always getting shafted!
…and this is why i just love this forum!!

there are not that many class 1 jobs advertised near here and usually want experienced class 1 drivers, although I have my c+e I have not driven an artic since my test 3 years ago. That’s why I was thinking about agency work just now.

Get company to get you class 1 pass then go for assessment with agency through a 3rd party assessor but make sure you can blind side the 45’ between some others then listen for the call for the money that you now owe.
