Staveley Chemicals

Not many Chris, just the odd bits and bobs. My mother has a few, but as you know cameras seemed like specialist equipment in those days. He’s been gone along time now, and missed so much, but seeing the photos puts him right here again. I believe a lot of his old workmates went the same way , there was a woman on look north the other night asking about people who worked at Staveley works and then seeing this thread got the old gray matter working… If I find some pictures i’ll try and post you something, but being a light weight on the net , it may take a few attempts . It’s good to know one of his old buddy’s is on here . As a matter of interest i used to get into capper pass near Hull , was that one of Evans deliveries?. I am going back to mid eighties here. And to coin a phrase, it looks like it’s all houses now.

I never did Capper Pass and none of Evans wagons went in there as far as I know,I think it was Melton, side of A63 where they were.
I only know of three more ex Sheffield Evans lads still ticking over, one is Gordon Howarth who I keep in touch with and other two are Billy Walker and Arnie Green,oh and George Bloomer of course.
I’d like to see any photos you have, not a lot of Evans photos knocking around. Here’s one taken at BP North Sea Gas plant at Easington on Spurn Head tother side of Hull and I’ll bet you went in there with your dad at some time. The driver is Gordon Howarth, taken early 70s.It were a cold bloody hole in winter.

Easington was one of his regular runs. A bleak and wind wind swept place if i remember right. We once spent a night on the south coast in Hastings of all places. I can’t remember where the delivery was, but i do remember going to watch the wrestling, jonnie qwango, masam boola, and cyanide sid cooper. :grimacing: Much better than a night in cab hotel on a layby.

That Hastings drop was up the road at St.Leonards on an industrial estate. The product was phthalate from Saltend,an oily substance used in plastics.I did it once, from Trowell and back to Leicester Forest, two dodgy nights out and hard work in a MK3 and a MK5 for that matter. That would have been a rare night out for Ken.

You have a PM by the way.

Looking for Photographs or stories of tankers in or around Staveley Chemicals, 60s,70s or 80s. The works changed ownership several times over the years, the last owners bieng Rhodia

Up until the last 10 years or so, the plant seemed to be the centre of all things chemical with product coming and going all over the UK and Europe

Now closed and levelled just wondered if anyone wants to share memories

An old Foden/Atki to start the ball rolling

Hi remembering a few working out of there, some of there drivers Waker, Jeff, other tankers Fearns, Lambsons Norman Lewis. Taylors ( Litchfield) Blackrod Motors, George Bloomer, Meeks, S J Barrick

I worked for A.E.Evans from 1970 to 1979 and Staveley Chem was a regular place for me.We only did work out of BTC - benzene, toluene, cyclohexane plant.I went back in there in 1994 working for George Bloomer on the same work.I remember Fearns and Barricks well and also Benzene Transport who double-shifted their motors.I remember a Geoff on SCL transport,a bit of a comedian,I think his second name was Bottoms or something similar.Their own drivers were on top money.
Here’s a few photos,courtesy of Bonkey Dollocks or Flatman001.

And a few from my mate,Gordon Howarth who also worked for Evans,M and D and George Bloomer.
This is the old BTC plant.

One of George Bloomers ERF’s.

And one of M D T who worked out of SCL as well.

IIRC Suttons took over all the transport from SCL.You could load and tip 24/7 at the BTC plant,it was always a very busy place.I think J.Pass from Chesterfield did some drum work out of there and another local haulier who did the same, whose name escapes me - as usual

Finally,I had summat like this when I first started with Evans in SCL

More recent photo in 2005, not much left in the view down towards the South gate but Salt still coming in so still producing Chlorine etc

Anyone remember Robertson Buckley, another name lost in History, photo looks like the 50s maybe ?
And some Atki’s next to the chlorine plant

Hi
excellent picks of the Atkinsons, any ideas what colour scheme these carried

They were a mucky yellow colour Dave when I knew them from 1969 ish

Sniffy:

That looks like a self clean to me

Were Robertson Buckley the forerunners of Buckley’s Tankers in Warrington?
Those two plant men were still there in 1994

A quick Google suggests Robertson Buckley were from Erdington ■■

Managed to find somemore photo’s from the 70’s and 80’s,

Not sure about Health and safety in the first one, how times of changed

A couple more from the late eighties, as I remember around the time the plant started to run down,
