Starting tramping in the new year..... HELP!

hi all,

starting my first long distance (uk) tramping job in the new year doing tipper work coal, feed, sand and the such.

i’ve got a few questions if anyone can help. I have noticed when im driving all day my feet sweat like a man on a ■■■■ charge. do the more versed drivers wear some thing other then lace up boots? i see some of our continental friends changing their footwear is this the done thing??

can someone compile or point me in the right direction on things i should be taking for the week■■? i’ve done my own list but if some one could add their 2pence as i may have missed something vital :unamused:

any tips? please help me!!! ■■■■■■■■ myself to be honest haha

You don’t need steel toe caps whilst driving remember that, with regards to what to take tramping do a search there’s loads of info on it but remember ear plugs are your friend

i remember as i young man in my first job with very early starts it was killing me as my younger brother would make such a noise in the night so i borrowed some ear plugs from the job… it came to the nighttime ear plugs in ears i lay my head down with much confidence of a good nights sleep ‘’ i mean these things were like super good’’ i could only hear myself breathing which i guess in a odd way was kinda soothing… anyway  the next time i woke up my bedroom door had been broken down and my dad ,mum , 2 paramedics where stood over my sleeping naked body. probably the last time i used ear plugs and probably the last time i ever locked my door in the night :unamused:

There have been lots of trampers checklist threads on the forum before mate, so do a search for those items…

Best of luck by the way!

And how to avoid cab roll when parked in a crap spot (with passing traffic) is also covered in TNUK!
Although I think the best advice is to try to get a gig where YOU choose when and where you pull up…

With a tipper ,there is no need to run over driving hours to find secure parking, which is a problem for loaded curtain sided trailers .
When at mills, farms and quarries, ask the drivers there about places to park over night, most are free with facilities walking distance away .
To save motorway prices on coffee, get a good quality Thermos .
Wilkinson sell anti bacterial wipes for 50p, are ideal to wipe over the cab and steering wheel .
Most fuel stations sell a pink liquid in a spray bottle, a brilliant product and for £5.95 leaves a nice smell .
Big sports bag to transfer kit from car to cab .

I’ve got a large holdall bag which i keep putting EVERYTHING IN its packed with stuff and I’ve not nearly finished :unamused: i’ve got wipes and everything like that so far but going forward could do with being a little more frugal when buying them

only thing i aint worked out in my head is water for washing dishes and stuff and also for kettle ect ect. do people get a largish water container and keep this in their passenger foot-well ■■?

Camping shops sell big water containers with a tap at the bottom .
For drinking water, Lidl and Aldi sell multi pack bottles .
Tupperware boxes are ideal for storing bits and bobs.
A clip board to keep paperwork tidy .
Hand steriliser for when on the road, public loos where they don’t wash their hands .
Spare fuses for the lorry, nothing more annoying than no power for the phone or satnav .

Go outdoors large water container,or a good sturdy 5 litre bottle .just doing my list aswell.

Presuming you’re going to st transport? I’ve not long left. Presuming by the picture you have?

Plenty of ■■■■ tish

for water just go asda and buy a 5ltr bottle for about 1.10

i keep them on the passenger steps held in place by the door so they aint in my way but you cant do this with all trucks.

hands free kit if your cab hasnt got one built in as well cos if youre anything like me youll be on the phone constantly cos youll get bored
