Start on Class 2! *mini diary

Hey,

I managed to get a start on agency a day after I had an interview with them! I got asked there n then when I was available, so I got told I was starting at 6am at Upton Steel in Markfield, perfect for me as its only around 5-6 mins from my house!

So on the night before I was getting my bag ready, wondering what to take and I just filled it up with everything bar the kitchen sink.

Woke up at 5am had my breakfast etc and set out to upton’s, upon arrival the car park was filling up and my nerves started to kick in. Some guy directs me to wear the drivers gather and that I would get instructions from them.

I got handed paper work and keys and said we will see you back around lunch time…I was like what? whose going with me? They said nobody, to which he asked why I wanted somebody with me, to my amazement the agency didnt tell them I was a complete and utter virgin to industry and I have never been out unaccompanied. The agency told them that I had done steel before when in actual fact I hadn’t done a thing, and I didnt even know how to properly get on with a digi card. I thought my day was over before I had even started :frowning:

But around 5mins later he came back and said we will use but I’ll have to come with you and show you the ropes, so I thought he was going to be driving first as I had never driven this type of gearbox before or a Scania.

But anyway jumped in got comfortable and reversed it into the unit for the forklift to load me up, he showed me everything on the truck, from the most basic stuff like climbing on the back of the truck, chaining the load down.

So we set off from the yard with me driving and to my amazement I just fell straight into it, and Dave who was my mentor for the day was massively impressed with how confident I was and how easily I took to it, we got to our first drop in Swadlincote around 7:45am, found the place no problem and unloaded in a few mins.

Next off we headed to a place in Cannock, little bit tighter to get to and a car was blocking where we had to unload, so Dave went inside and made our presence known and to get the car moved. With the car moved out the way I just pulled infront of the gates undone the chains ready to get tipped.

After this we had our final drop of the morning in stoke, so it was quick drive to the M6, although going through a 7.5 tonne weight limit which was sign posted 2 miles down the road from the industrial estate with no where to turn round  So onto the M6 and was due a break, so pulled off into the services to have my 15mins and by this time Dave had phoned the TM and let him know what went off with the agency, but although he said It was my first job he had nothing but good things to say about me, my driving skill and the way i presented myself. I asked Dave how he thought it was going, and he said he felt totally relaxed and that you’ve done exactly as I’ve said.

So while at the M6 services I got out and went to the loo, but also phoned my mum to let her know how I had been getting on, apparently my mum knew I was going to be ‘Brilliant’…typical mum. :stuck_out_tongue:

Onto Stoke for our final drop before returning to the yard. Now this is where my arse started grabbing the seat, we found the place without to much of a problem, but as Dave went inside he got told that to get tipped we had to be round the other side of the building, and the streets were really tight, cars parked everywhere and it was congested as it was just coming up to dinner time. So I had to drive 2 miles to turn around, and then had to make 2 hairpin turns holding up traffic in both directions. Negotiated them without to much hassle, and reversed onto the bay to get unloaded.

Then it was back to the yard via A50, M1 nice 50 mile journey with no bother.

So while back at the yard I had a 30min break ready for the this afternoons work, Dave popped over to his lorry to have his lunch probably to give his brain a rest from all the â– â– â– â–  I was flying at him!

He came back and said ‘Right Drew, your on your own now youth’

â– â– â– â– .

Dave had to go do his own run that he was ment to do this morning. So I was now entering the unknown as it were, and I got told I was being fully loaded and I had the MOST weight on the lorry of the day…shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit haha.

So again same drill as in the morning, reversed into the unit and got loaded up, where it took me and Dave 5mins this morning to chain up, it took me an hour to do on my own. I was properly embarrassed it took me that long, but the TM came a long asked how I was doing and he said it could take your 2 hours to load up, it doesnt matter to us as long as it chained up safely and securely, we would rather you do that and be safe, then to take 5 mins to do it and shed your load and possibly injure someone or wose.

So with everything chained up, and everything check and double checked, I gathered my paper and set for my 1 local drop which was in Loughborough, luckily I knew exactly where it was and the best road to take, so I set off and got to the drop in around 15-20mins, found the guy to unload me, very decent young chap like myself but possibly a bit younger then me.

Everything unloaded, tidied up and paperwork complete, which ment I had quick minute or 2 to take some snaps of my first ever maiden voyage.

So it was back to yard to park up for the day, and I got nothing but praise from all the lads that were already back in the yard, with some of them even cheering haha. The guys at Uptons really helped me out and had a lot of patience with me, I hope they ask me to come back next at some point.

All in all I dont think I could of asked for a better first day on the job, The truck wasn’t damaged, the load arrived safely, nobody got hurt and I made it back in one piece with little to no mistakes made in the afternoon.

Cheers

Drew!

Great diary and good to hear it went well.

Yes it’s true that you get thrown in the deep end with agency work and they will tell all sorts of rubbish to get you in there so they get their cut of your wages.

Looks like you handled it well and got the job done with no damage.

An hour to tie your load down is fine. Safety is always number one priority.

At least you have an insight into the real world of lorry driving and next time you are asked to go out you can be a bit more relaxed and confident.

Lets hope it’s not too long before you are asked back.

Well done

I Drove for Uptons from 1989 to 2004

Is Eddie the driver still there?

How about Dave Elliot? - he was the TM when I was there

If you see him again tell him ROG says Hi

I bet they gave the agency hell over sending an inexperienced steel delivery driver !!
