Standby, standby and more standby

Hi Guys,

Just a little update on the agency work front here in the northwest.

I admit I am a special case being on 19 and passed in the last 6 months.

Work does seem to be picking up, last week got a call on tuesday saying I was needed for a shift on Wednesday and then most likely on Thursday and Friday.

However… Got a call 30 mins later and work has been cancelled…

Get a call on wednesday saying the same firm need me for Thursday… Guess what 10 mins after getting details, work cancelled :frowning:

Now doing the standby thing again, up at 04:55, tomorrow will be the 10th I’ve done however yet to be called in, oh well!

Just getting quite frustrated, just need that one break then it should be ok as firms will take back same drivers, just can’t seem to break into that circle :frowning:

Don’t think there is anything I can do really :frowning:

Oh well shall just keep waiting!

Rob

Hey.

You can also just try Local Transport companies etc… Try calling or even dropping in to local companies as you might get a full time position with someone.

Sure you will get a lot of set backs but just keep going and get your Name out there, at some point you will get something. I’m in the same boat and just trying, trying and trying

the other way to do it is once you have got a call from your agency booking the work, is to turn your phone off, then turn up at the place of work and if they then say you’re not required, you can claim wages from your agency, normally between 4 and 8 hours

Are you on with just one agency…?

If so, register with another, but don’t tell them you’re already with ■■ agency as they’ll be less inclined to find you work.

Plus, do a little door knocking, take copies of CV with you, if you’ve got depots, industrial complexes near you, go and knock on their doors, shows you are keen etc. You never know, they maybe thinking about hiring and contacting the job centre, placing ads or phoning agencies - if they say no, ask if you can leave your CV for future positions. Don’t restrict yourself to just one type of driving ie Class 2 etc, be prepared to drive anything, 7.5t, van etc

Long shot, but a mate of mine got a job that way after getting made redundant.

If the agency book you then cancel with only ten minutes notice, I would invoice them for 4 hours work. If I’d left home already when they cancel it’d be for 8 hours work. The phone trick is a good one…

Mate, I know you are looking to get in but don’t let them treat you like ■■■■. Demand respect and they will still ring when they need someone, but will realise they can’t ■■■■ all over you.

Keep at it. Knocking on doors is your best bet, as recommeded, take a CV and tell them how your dad was a driver all his life and you lived and breathed trucks as a nipper…

And remember…all agencies are run by lying cheating ■■■■■■■ ■■■■■…

Hiya mate
I dont know what agents you are with in the North west but i think we have all had the be on stand by :open_mouth: keep your phone on :open_mouth: and we will call you back in 10 mins stories at first but it does get easier belive me once you have done a couple of jobs and shown them that you are reliable work will or should come in at a steady pace  .
Also dont stick to just one Agent get as many as you can i know it wont be easy at 19 but some will take you on  im with 7 Agents now and out of the 7 i only get work of 5 of them at the moment …most of mine are in Preston as i live in Blackpool and only one drivers agency here thats Tower recruitment …
But heres a few to try Drivers Direct Leyland Preston
Country wide drivers Darwin Blackburn
Hi-flyers Preston
Best Connections Preston
Acorn People preston

These are the main Agents that have given me work over the last few months they are all on the net and i have had no trouble getting payed from them …
I hope this helps matey
Best of luck Roy

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the info!

I do actually keep cold calling firms around my area but no one seems to be hiring anyone and my age has proved to be a problem. However didn’t ask if I could leave a CV so may try that trick!

There aren’t many agencies that will take me on, I’m currently with TopGear and have also been trying to register with DriverHire but they are dragging their feet immensely saying they are waiting for references, I know for a fact that one of my referees replied a week ago to their request!!! I have also put my details onto ManPowers website, but I find it a bit too remote to come to anything so may give the local office a call.

The only other one that I know has work around my ADR but having seen a recent thread about them I’m not so sure I want to try them? Asking drivers to pay them before you even go to the work place? Or something like that?

Again thanks for everyone’s help!!!
