I knew you`d say it better than I could.
Hope you enjoyed your brief break away from duties on “arsetronic” watch.
Actually, that last post is even better laid out, and more comprehensively argued, than your previous posts. Practice DOES make perfect.
I cannot live up to those kind words, but nothing incites me more to put pen to paper, as it were, more than these bloody gearboxes.
Whilst on the subject, what happens at type approval stage or is that another exercise in box ticking or what.
Isn’t there some form of actual road testing at MIRA Millbrook or some other place, cos if there is then should i have been one of the testers i’d have gone about 300 yards or maybe 4 rubbery gearshifts, stopped the lorry taken the keys out, walked back to the office in disgust, and on my report written in red ink, ‘‘this gearbox should be removed and placed in a skip’’.

Good question.
MAN especially with a tanker on the back.
Most of the issues with this gearbox seems to stem from the clutch actuation. I know that MAN suffers from seizing of the release bearing which causes the clutch to be suddenly released and slowly engage. I have seen the same failure on Volvo and new Actros too. When the clutch is removed it has plenty of life left but the release mechanism is shot. The clutch life seems to be massively increased on a robotised gearbox over a standard manual.
used to stall my daf hiab sometimes if it was on a steep hill. felt like a right mug

So was wondering if any of you lot had managed to stall an auto 'box motor…?
Only once or twice a week. Usually at the most inappropriate moment.
I work for a hire company as one of the on call mechanics. We have had many drivers try to set off in drive with no air built up on our Mercedes Axors, causing the unit to stall in gear. Generally we just attend the “breakdown” use the compressor in our vans to fill the air tanks then we do a manual reteach on the trucks gearbox to reset.
For a 20 minute job sometimes it’s taken me 2 hours to get there and 2 hours back. But at least it gets me out of the garage.

The only concussion to all the problems with auto boxes is not have them in the first place and return to manual gearboxes . The transport industry was completely fooled by the vehicle makers and in turn the leasing and hire companies in that this was the way to go to make their lives much easier for maintenance and lower repair costs , unfortunately it has not worked out that way . This happens when the motor is out of lease/hire and sold at 7/8 years old and some poor operator has to pull into a dealers workshop to have the transmission re-programmed etc , the dealer must rub their hands in glee at what they will charge !!! , a simple manual transmission that most workshops can carry out repairs on is still the way to go .■■?.

Yes, a hundred times, and that comes from someone who’s only ever read about all the trouble you lot have. You have my sympathy.

Assuming we leave the EU it would be interesting to find out if a UK reg Volvo FH for example could then be specced with an 18 speed Fuller. So far it seems like only the conventionals can be specced without I shift regardless of market.
Had a Merc stuck in 11th Gear on 3th Lane A69/M6 at Traffic Light.
Don’t feel so bad now
Dont worry, with more experience you
ll learn that nothing is ever the drivers fault. As you go thro your driving career you
ll meet all kinds of new and interesting people to blame. I know I have.
Auto boxes are not perfect. Neither are drivers. If you stall em all the time either they
re faulty or your technique is lacking. An occasional stall that you find the cause of, and can avoid in the future is not a problem.

Stalling can only really be a case of the thing being in the wrong gear in the wrong place at the wrong time.If it then needs the driver’s eyes and manual selection to fix that what’s the point of autos. While without any engine speed and input shaft speed interface they are obviously no good in the case of shunting manouvres and/or the idea that they can supposedly save clutch wear v a decent driver is also bs.

Seems the point is to enable everyone to drive to an equal (lower) standard. Maybe thee n
me wont be getting the mpg out of a truck that we can, and we won
t be handing back a truck well over the million klik mark with the original clutch and gearbox, but no-one will hand em back with a burnt clutch and wrecked
box at 10k km either. No, I am NOT a fan, of those things, but can see where operators are coming from. Guess time will prove who`s right on this. Me, obviously.

Which leaves the obvious question if they can’t be trusted to handle a ‘proper’ clutch and gearbox how can they be trusted with the rest of the job of driving a truck safely ?.
