ST Gobain Glass

Do St Gobain Glass run there own fleet or is it all subbies ?

The special fruity looking glass carrier trailers are all traction subby. Dunno about the other stuff they do.

Trunking may be subbed local
stuff own account

speaking of glass how do they work them trailers are they like a casette where the glass is loaded on a still then the still picked up like a cassette from the trailer or is it just like a curtain trailer where its just forked on - always been intriqued

Not much help to the op but I’ve always fancied having a go on these glass transporters, looks an interesting and varied job. Used to see lots across the water, not sure if that’s the case now.

Used to speak to a guy pulling them going over to Ireland, he says it’s a cage that slides out the back then slides the empty back in kinda thing? Didn’t quite get it at the time and didn’t ask to much cos I didn’t want him to realise i was stoopid

The trailer body/chassis forms an umbrella, no base, trailer wheels are mounted on 6 independantly air sprung stub axles, the floor of the trailer is a ‘stillage’ that the glass is clamped to and completes the trailer when attached.

Basically, and i haven’t driven one but a member of my family drives one for another company so this is second hand info, the stillage is released from the trailer skeleton and dropped down…or rather the trailer suspension is dropped till the stillage is on the ground, the two seperated and then the trailer raised leaving the stillage on the deck, then the vehicle is pulled forward leaving the stillage on the ground for loading/discharge, the trailer is not complete without the stillage so is only moved forward/backward, it couldn’t be driven willy nilly without the stillage, empty or loaded.

Wits need to be kept keen apparently, you could get it badly wrong, as said though interesting different job.

There was a video posted of how these glass trailers work, no doubt someone will re-post it

Often wondered how they worked.
Do they go overseas apart from Ireland and if its there own vehicles do they recruit themselves or through an agency
