I have wondered for ages why they do this?, i cant work out a logical reason for it can anyone tell me why they tie string between the cones?.
Maybe the cones like being ■■■■■■■,you know,a ■■■■■ sort of thing.

And you are supposed to use the coned off area in the event of a breakdown. And drag all the cones with!!
If you’ve noticed, there’s usually a double row of cones with the ‘inside’ row having string between them. It is deemed to be a physical barrier that would alert an otherwise focused roadworker to the fact that he’s about to step out into the main traffic flow. It’s our old favourite H&S that is to blame for this one!
The other ‘advantage’ of the string is that if a brokendown vehicle does need to move off the carrigeway it can drive through the string, the only effect being that a load of other cones will be pulled over.
And i always thought they were so the guy collecting them up new where the next one was

I expect it’s been done though, some irishman (well they’re all irish arent they!?) happily working away then takes one step back in front of an artic!
I think the other reason is also so that in the event that a vehicle clips the base of one of the cones then the string and the weight of the other cones is enough to stop it being flung out into the traffic.
I think they should instead of string use the hiviz material they make PPE out of. As well all know this ‘super fabric’ is impervious to anything and would stop a fully laden 44 tonner from careering through the cones in the event of a blow out.

But the outside row doesn’t have the string and they are the cones most likely to be clipped and flung infront of other traffic!
Well it depends on how long it is
Cones are roped together to stop us crazy tipper drivers from entering/exiting sites except at the designated works accesses.
The thinking behind this is that if the ropes were not there, we would dive in/ out of a job whenever we could to avoid the numerous obstacles and delays put in our way on site by the contractors.
It doesn’t stop numpty car drivers from following us into sites of course which is always amusing especially when its been dug out to sub-base!
The cones are on day release from prison and like the old chain gangs in America are tied together to stop them escaping, string is ample for the job,as chain would be a bit overkill
Right Gents…
1 - The string is there to stop tired and careless workers walking out into live traffic when stepping out of vans tipper lorries and the like… It should be 1.2m wide ie two base to base 1m cones 'footed in from the traffic edge of lane. The rope then goes on the inner cone edge.
2 - Yes it does prevent tipper drivers leaving site except for the works access exit - not that is there for that purpose. Driving through it has caused the deaths of 2 traffic managemnt staff in the last 12months by being dragged down the road behind ‘exiting’ site traffic having been caught inthis rope.
You are right it does need to be brighter…
You are right that traffic breaking down can drive through it if signed, therefore it needs to be in short 50 - 100m lengths not (zb) 1200m runs. in material that breaks not one you could rope rebar on with.
PLEASE USE THE SIGNED ROUTES…THEY ARE THERE 4 A REASON. but i would agree taht we need to make better provison for site lorries on piecework to get in and out on some sites.
Hope this helps
Please feel free to abuse me…

thats just to keep they on place.
Some bad drivers push they with there Bumpers and hit they away.
if they hang on ropes like now will they maybe fall, but just maybe, but kept around theres place
I can totally understand conelayers post,
What I would like to know is, wtf is the difference between his company and the muppets on the A1 who are driving towards you in the lanes, with main beam and a set of hazards on.
These blokes deserve to be squashed.
On Friday there were roadwork signs on the matrix gantrys for at least 2 miles near peterborough saying that the 3 inside lanes were closed. Being a good lad, I obeyed the order only to be passed on the inside by evey dog and his man.
At the end of the non existant roadworks, there is a ■■■■■■ cone truck on the wrong side with main beam on
Hey Wheelnut
Driving towards you on same carriageway?..If so let me know…where n when…if you want…You are right they deserve to be knocked down…sorry cant say that now…they have to be told and re-educated…much like drunk people on forklifts…

Was coming down the a1 last Thursday From Purdy lodge. I was pulling a double decker and following another one of ours. We Went into one of the many sections of nightime works on there at the moment and they had us over in the outside lane with cones down the White line . Its only when we get half way thorugh I realise there guys working IN BETWEEN the cones on the cats eyes or something!! I mean these guys were Really close and it would only have taken one small slip of concentration then god knows. No site lighting Just the Hi viz jackets which were not very hi viz
I have to say this is not uncommon.Yellow Hi Vis vests seems to be teh ultimate defence against being stuck by an artic…not.Forgive me but wheres teh nearest large civilisation to purdy lodge■■?

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago on the Al near Newark the guy had his dipped beam on which i thought was wrong considering he was so close to me on the same carriageway with acone between us so i flashed my main beam (short blast)to let him know he was blinding oncoming traffic so he decided to give me a constant main beam from him as i approached him.
My 30+ ton v his little 7.5 tonner sounds ok to me but i think only one of us would be waking up the next day .
