Sports Direct warehouse in the news

Did anyone else hear them talking about it on the news today?

Is it the one at Mansfield they’re on about?

Personally I think it’s great if they keep the mongs on the hand wheels on their toes by monitoring them via cctv and telling individuals to get their arses into gear over the tannoy. More places should do it.

Myself and 12 other drivers cleared one distribution centre to move it to new premises the other week doing about 4 shunts each. We were effectively put in charge of the warehouse staff. We soon got them flying and no trailer took more than 15 minutes to load/tip.

How many people would want to work in a place like that I know I wouldn’t.

Bet you don’t want cctv Your cab though ?

Or wait in a queue unpaid to go through security checks before you leave work after a shift?

They should tell the security bods to ■■■■ right off.
And regarding that ■■■■ who sounded like management saying searches were “in the contract”
the lads should say they only accepted that under duress because they wanted a job.
It sounds a crap job anyway. There was a programme on tv a while back about Amazon, they
are a similar sort of place to work for too.

I don’t need monitoring, I’m self motivated. :sunglasses:

axletramp:
They should tell the security bods to [zb] right off.

As it was agency staff they’d probably get told not to come back tomorrow if they did that.

And these aren’t highly skilled and paid truck drivers like wot we are, they have to take any crap job.

Probably so, but at least they would have made their feelings known, and it might do the lads a favour
because they can then get the dole office to put them through their class 1, and get a decent job. :bulb: :open_mouth:

The one thing that does work is not spending your money with the company. The share price has been falling since the first of these stories came to light. Remember Gerald Ratner saying ‘we only sell tat’ ?

They’ve been in the news quite a few times recently when their working conditions were exposed, but because most of the staff are agency and the vast majority are Polish or similar, they can distance themselves from most of the flack by each claiming ignorance over the problems. By the sounds of things, they fly extremely close to the wind in terms of employment law, but getting anyone to speak up is virtually impossible as they can’t get another job.

If anyone was to have a secret camera in there however, I suspect there would be hell to pay, but no doubt security is too tight to get such recording devices into the place.

That place fleeced the council as well as its workers by getting very low business rates to get them to build there in the first place, but that agreement was meant to last only a few years. When it came to an end, Sportsdirect said if you try to charge us more, we’ll simply shut up shop and since almost everyone is agency there’s no redundancy etc to pay. Lovely guy who runs the company…

Near Mansfield yes, but in a lesser county… just.

Mike Ashley chose Shirebrook (known locally by another name where you replace the “r” with a “t”) for his empire’s headquarters.

The place is literally swarming with Eastern Europeans carrying Lidl carrier bags.

You should read Dennis Skinner’s book ‘‘Sailing Close to the Wind’’…he’s a big fan of Sports Direct… :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

The owner has his fingers in to many pies   he exploits worker to the hilt most of the staff in the shops are on zero hours contracts with basic min wage being paid

I hate going into the place shop or for delivery but then I dislike the man

Well he’s ■■■■■■ the Toon Army. He’s another one to look out for on pedestrian crossings.

Cheers Contraflow, told you Dennis was a big fan…

The type of environment at Sport Direct isn’t anything new, it’s been like that for years!
We as a society allegedly just care about it more now…

I did a few weeks at a circle K warehouse some 25 years ago, and that was very much like that. You were monitored on your pick rate, and you were chased by the supervisors pretty much hourly on that rate. If you weren’t up to scratch you got binned off and a new bod took your place. I quit while I was ahead and got a better job, as for me it was just a filler thank’s to Maggie’s plans to improve the country!

The real problem is that employers have all the power, as there are more than enough people looking for work. They simply don’t need to care about staff retention, as they know that they can replace you in the blink of an eye. Nothing will change while this is the case…

I think I’m right in saying, this guy owns Newcastle football team as well, enough said, wonder if he treats the player’s the same, an pays the same rate,as he pays the ordinary workers, I wouldn’t think so.
