So if I drive for 30 minutes, one hour on the bay,if I leave it on break for 45 minutes, then drive 4.5 hours, then I need another 45,then one hour and finish shift. But ,while on the bay,if I left on break for 15 ,then 45 min poa,I could drive 4 hours,30 minute break and then 1 hour 30 driving to finish. Both scenarios 6 hours driving but by only having 15 minutes break on the bay,I finish the shift 45 minutes earlier.
This cant be right,can it…
Try again in English?

That is legally correct and yes it is silly

What is being said is this
Scenario 1
Drive 30
on bay for 1 hour doing nothing but record 45 break in that time
drive 4.5 hours
break 45
Drive 1 hour
finish - total shift 7.5 hours
Scenario 2
Drive 30
on bay for 1 hour doing nothing but record 15 break in that time
drive 4 hours
break 30
Drive 1.5 hours
finish - total shift 6.75 hours
number 2 is 45 mins shorter than 1 doing the same amount of driving
Thanks for that,I always assumed it was best to get the 45 minute break in,but it seems not.

It depends on what your goal is. If it’s getting home as early as possible it often isn’t. If it’s hanging the bag out to get the most money often it is if your total daily driving is below 9hrs and it’ll trigger a second 45 minute you don’t actually need.
Im trying to do my best because theyre paying a good rate.If it was a lower pay then Id have the 45 and the second break
Simple answer is take enough break however it’s suits you to remain legal. They can’t do you for taking enough breaks or if you need a break. However you can be in trouble for not taking enough breaks.
I always fit my breaks in to suit me and the run I’m doing so I don’t need to take extra breaks if I can help it as that just prolongs my night.

Way i see it if only had a short drive hour half or so . No point taking a 45 as you’d only have to stop again for another 45. Best having 15 .
Then can carry on for another 3 hours or so .
But all depends on each situation if you know your run for.the day and can get it all done in 4.5 driving then obv take the full 45
Personally I always split them. That’s how I got used to it, in plus it helps you not run over your 6 working hours without a break.

I often used to do this on the way back from the West Country to Kent on a Friday afternoon. Taking a 15 minute break then putting it back on “other work” while loading at, say, Plymouth late Friday morning rather than a 45 meant I only had to take a 30 at Fleet services rather than another 45, and arriving at the M25 at 1645 rather than 1700 when the traffic levels had increased exponentially could get me home over an hour earlier.
In fact I even asked on here if it was legal to show “other work” while actually on a break and the best reply was “Well, you could be thinking about work”.

I think you may need new batteries in your calculator. Scenario 1 gives a shift length of 7h45m, while Scenario 2 results in a shift of 7h30m. The shift is shorter, but only by 15 mins, not 45.

It’s not right. Using the timings you gave the “long” shift is only 15 minutes longer than the “short” version. Both have 6 hrs driving. The difference being that the “long” version has 2 x 45 minute breaks plus 15 minutes POA (or “excess” Break while sat on the bay) while the “short” version has 1 x 45 minute Break plus 45 minutes POA.
Yes sure,at least I know now

Thanks for explaining it! [emoji3]
Scenario 1 is 7.75 hrs
Scenario 2 is 7.50 hrs
The difference is the last break by 15 mins! Hardly going to change the world either way so what’s the point of the post?

I always think if you can’t explain it then you can’t understand it yourself.
An extreme example could be when 2 drivers have a run that requires 9 hours driving. They both drive for an hour then one hour on bay.First driver has 15 minutes break,30 min poa.2nd driver has 45 minutes on bay.The 2nd driver will finish his shift 45 minutes earlier

You’ve lost me completely this time. I have no idea what point you are attempting to make.
