Splitting driving between 2 man (wht is allowed...)

So I’m with a buddy driver tonight, gona split driving… so basically would this be allowed; from London he does 1 hour to services, 15 min break, I take over n do the rest to say Leeds, we have 30 min break, I then do 1 hour back down to services, 15 min break, he takes over does the rest to London… am I [we] allowed to break it up like this (however we want) or does it totally not work like that…? Cheers

You need to have driven before you can take a break that will could towards your driving break, any break taken before you have actually done any driving won’t count towards your driving break.
You could literally drive for 5 mins then take a break and it will count towards your driving break but if you didn’t drive at all the had 15 mins break then drove for 3hrs then had 30 mins then drive another 1h31 you’d get an infringement.

Ok, so would this be ok… He does 1 hour, 15 min break, I do 4.5 driving, 45 min break, I do 1 hour, 15 min break, he does 4.5 driving, finish…? I’m guessing no because his or my 15 min break it will ‘ask’ why didn’t he/me finish the last 3.5 hours…?

That’s fine, you don’t have to run to 4.5hrs to reset your driving time it’s the break that resets your driving time not the driving time itself so the above is ok.

Ok cool [emoji106]

So after a 15 min break you can switch drivers whenever you want basically…

As long as you keep to the ‘rules’ obviously

Yes there is no minimum driving times, only maximum ones when it comes to breaks ect, just also be sure to keep an eye on WTD breaks too.

If using driver 2 slot the first 45 mins of POA will be deemed as break so no need to stop vehicle and take a break

Ok… so he drives an hour, we swap quick (no 15 min break) and I continue, no problem…

WTD breaks? Thanks for the advice guys!

I am assuming you will both be together within the first hour of the shift starting so will be under MM rules using slots 1 and 2 of the digi tacho

That being the case then this is legal if both drivers have a 10 hour driving shift available

D1 = driving for 2 hours with D2 in slot 2 on POA
Change over quickly
D2 now driving for 2 hours with D1 in slot 2 on POA where first 45 mins is deemed as break so 4.5 driving time is reset

I sense a slight hint of humor in your very thought provoking reply ROG…

Meant seriously as it is a legal issue

FTFY

It’s legal but I’ve no idea why anyone would want to do that.

It seems an easy job made hard to me. Why doesn’t the first driver just do 4.5hrs or whatever to save keep poncing about swapping the cards over

Maybe because the place they are going is 5 hours away and they want to have their break when they get there…or something like that

I knew there’d be a logical explanation

Doing max 2 hours at a time keeps each driver more alert for each bit of the drive
