Speed

I have a regular run,
Did it flat out for several weeks, 56mph, spreadover 13-14 hours.
Now driving to save costs at 50mph. Spreadover the same 13-14 hours!
Everyone overtakes me, but I catch them up at junctions, roundabouts etc.
I get 4 mpg more and arrive chilled.
So why is everyone so desperate to overtake when the nett result is no different.
Slow down and save fuel, spoil the governments fuel tax rip off.

Do any other drivers do the same, or are you a thrash like mad, heart attack panic type.

Yes but it does make a difference though, if I’m going 56mph on 200mph journey and your doing 50mph, by the time I get to my destination you will still be 24 miles behind me which is a long time.
And the money your company saves on fuel is cancelled out by the extra 2 hours they pay you for your shift as your in a queue to be tipped now, because 2 trucks have got there before you pushing your turn around time way up

200 mile journey I mean.

On a 200 mile journey, an extra 4mpg works out at around £50 saved (assuming 8mpg flat out and 12 if you take it easy and about £6.00 per gallon of fuel)

How many drivers on here get £50 for 2 hours work? seems to me the boss will still be at least 30 quid up not withstanding the extra 2 hours. That’s an extra £150 profit per week. If you have a fleet of 5 trucks all taking it a little easier on the loud pedal, the boss is saving £750 a week. In this climate that’s not to be sniffed at!

Your right that’s a lot of money saved and i was shooting in the dark with my maths but from a drivers point of view not an employer, that’s along time added onto a shift in my opinion, and it doesn’t warrant the wages of today, not mine anyway!!

& your not tired & stressed if you take it easy…

Plus the OP has said his spreadover is no different, so he’s not actually doing any extra hours.

The savings are huge no doubt about it, I,m paid on the hour so no problems, the only issue is when you come up behind a slower vehicle on a hill and you need the extra speed to pass, factor in the reduction in wear and tear and the figure add up.

As for the heart attack types keep it up top entertainment, how very sad that you have a job that makes you behave in such a manner In the end nobody gains by racing about only the drivers suffer.
I suspect that after many years of that type of work it is bound to effect your health, one glance around any goods in waiting room will confirm this.

The thing that many people miss out when calculating the savings etc. of various speeds is that rarely does anyone drive at a constant speed for hour after hour. Even small variations for a short time can make a difference. A couple of red lights or busy junctions can defeat all the rushing around. BUT - I usually stay on the limit … because I can

Out of my way :imp: i’m paid by the day :sunglasses:

Here we go again. Worrying about how much the boss is or isn’t saving!

I will be honest here…If it is a family firm you are working for, then yes, it is important that you consider that the boss is making a decent profit, as it is part of your job to make that profit and you should be professional enough to understand and realise this and ensure this happens at all times.
I know I do.

If it is a large corporation that is owned by shareholders, then they have the responsibility to ensure that you work in the way that they want you to work.

I know who I work for and why…And ■■■■ on the large corporations who treat you like detritus :sunglasses:

4 mpg? what aload of Bs, way less than 1 more like it with a majority of motorways.

This is just a holier than thou, make up a load of rubbish post. What were your fuel figures when you were in a hurry and what are they now? How heavy do you run?

If you were running as much as 4 mpg worse than even a semi-sensible run then you must have been driving like an idiot.

still got to deal with the idiots in the office = still stressed!

Why not do 40mph everywhere then, will only cost you a little extra time huh ■■ :smiling_imp:

If im in no rush 52-53, if busy as fast as she’ll go 55-56. Wont do less than 50 on sc, but will take my time getting up to speed if theres lots of roundabouts etc.

I’m driving an 06 Stralis 480 thats done 421,000k’s working often within a 90 mile radius but more regularly don’t go further than Manchester on tank container work & if I drive on the limiter & let the stupid AStronic ■■■■■ box make it’s own mind up, it will normally return between 7.8 & 8. If I take over the lower ratio gearchanges (up to 11th) & keep it down to 85k’s it does well into the 9’s, last week 9.4, this week so far 9.1.
