Speed limits driving 7.5

hi lads

I’ve been driving a 7.5 tonner and as i aware the speed limits are 50 sc 60 dc and 70 mw i’ve been sticking to these, but got me thinking what would happen if got catced by one of those cameras with height sensor, would they send me the letter assuming i should be driving under 40 (sc) just beacause my height is over 11ft, or they would check which kind of lorry it was before that?

another question is, these speed limits are for up to 7.5 incluiding these, is that right? i assume that i’m driving a 7.5 but tbh i’ve never seen the log book or something. how can i check that it is actually a 7.5 and not a 10t or something.

cheers

to verify if you drive a 7.5 check the gross weight on the plate.
speed limits apply to weight not size.

cheers mate.

so flat out with my 7.5t )

Those that issue notices usually check the DVLA database first to find out what rules the vehicle needs to follow but they can get it wrong

IIRC, if the 7.5 ton vehicle is not restricted, as it seems your’s isn’t, then you can also use lane 3 on a motorway.

However, when I used to do 70 (ish) in unrestricted 7.5t vehicles beware of the car’s that like to get in front of you, give you unpleasant hand signals, flashing hazards and keep you behind them.

I got pulled in Somerset in a 7.5t in lane 3. I was told by Plod that it is illegal now. Just saying!

Only if it has (or requires) a limiter Vern.

if it’s limited yes! and it depends how long you’ve had your entitlement too! :sunglasses:

We have a 7.5 tonner in our place, or so I thought… the plate says (I think) 8.4 tones

Design weight or GVW ?

I’d assume it was Gross Vehicle Weight. Next time I have the chance I’ll have a good look at it

Correct!

What are these cameras with a height sensor? I don’t see how they could work to identify weight class as you can get 7.5 tonners (like yours) that are higher than some 44 ton set ups. Could the “height sensor” you mentioned be a number recognition camera? If it’s linked to the dvla database then it would be able to know what weight class your vehicle is and what the speed limit is for your vehicle. Don’t know if that set up is in operation, but I’ve never heard of height sensors linked to speed cameras. The only height sensors Ive seen are near low bridges that activate a sign saying “use middle of road” or “over height vehicle, turn round”

We’ve got an 8.4 ton GVW Mercedes Atego sleeper, same size as a 7.5 tonner but it’s slightly higher payload and the lower speed limits apply.

Back on op’s original question, I’ve been flashed by speed cams in a 7.5 on single carriageways numerous times doing between 45-50, never heard a thing.

thanks for the replies chaps,

Inext time i’wont forget to check de gross weight when i jump into the lorry.
This one does have limiter, is limited up to 56mph.

ched, the height sensor that i’ve heard of is apparently a beam just before the radar location, lets’s say is placed at 11ft, so any vehicle that crosses the beam actives a signal that inmediatly trigger the radar at a lower speed.
I guess, before police send the letter, they check the number plate to see what kind of vehicle was, if was a 7.5t just wouldn’t send the fine.

I’ve also seen something about axle sensors placed on the road.

that’s what i found diging up a little bit in this forum.

cheers
