Speed Limiters on trucks

windrush:
It was STANDERWICK and they were part of RIBBLE. They ran the ‘Gay Hostess’ double deck coach service and were expected to cruise at 70 mph on the M1, however one coach overturned when the driver swerved to avoid a lamp standard that had fallen across the motorway and things changed after that. The newer coaches were only designed to cruise at 64 mph apparently. Plenty of interesting info on the tinternet.

Pete.

Yep, Standerwick it was. Memory ain’t wot it used to be.

Don’t worry lad, NOTHING of mine is like it used to be!

Limiters ere introduced so the modern driver didn’t have to use a gearbox and only had to have two accelerator positions. Stopped and hard down. … I’ll get my tin helmet on.

Limiter? I can’t remember where that fuse goes.

The early ones weren’t very high tech! My old Eurotech would quite happily manage 80mph up the M20 heading home from Italy. Strange how that fuse used to blow![GRINNING FACE WITH SMILING EYES][GRINNING FACE WITH SMILING EYES][GRINNING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]

Doesn’t apply to Lomas :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

:lol::mrgreen:

Ours used to “break” so we could try and wobble the caravans on the M20! Best we had was ex Murfitts Seddon Atkinson Strato’s, it seems they didn’t have limiters. Managed to get off the shuttle at 6pm on a Saturday and easily made last orders at our local in Tamworth!

Might be an obvious answer here but why were speed limiters originally fitted to trucks, I mean what was the idea of them? Was it to keep the greens/environmentalists happy by cutting down on emissions, was it for road safety, to curb speed, was it both of these or was it some other reason.

There were cheaper Tyres on the Marked which were made for lower Speed. As Companies didnt tell Drivers who drove Speeds as usually the Gov stept in. Think were the German BAG who blow Alarm.

I was driving an unlimited F reg up until about 1994, but It think it did get retro fitted with a limiter some time after that. No doubt the ruling came from EU. I think 56 is fast enough at 44 tonnes though, mainly to account for reacting to other road users antics.

If an old FL6 with about 200hp was good for 85mph back in the 80s imagine how fast the V8 glory boys would be doing now in their 620s and 730s.

No thanks, there’s enough carnage as it is.

Dont tell anybody ,but when i was young and daft i took my m8 with me and had a daf 95 0ff the clock on the m11 one satdy nite coming back from dover,i think it was either 18 or 15 fuse that killed the limiter, very stupid i know but my m8 egged me on :frowning: :frowning: there was no wheel wobble and it was very quiet in the cab

They were introduced with fair competition in mind. the most common speed limit for hgv’s in europe is 90kph, so they decided that’s what they should be set at.
the idea was that if all trucks were doing around the same speed, then competition between operators throughout europe would be fair.
silly, but true.

At Wickes years ago we had a DAF95 hire unit that was allocated to one of our more impatient drivers, I think he must have had a new job lined up cos all of a sudden his tacho analysis started coming back with overspeeds (up to 75mph some times) The TM hauled him in for a disciplinary and asked why he had been doing 75mph, and the answer was “because it wouldn’t go any faster” needless to say instant dismissal

Ahhhh yes number 14 fuse in a Eurotech 380  :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:
and the 340 s 420 s with the twin split, in top gear just force the gearstick forward a lil and youd fly  :grimacing: :grimacing:

Interesting post and as one of those responsible for the intro of speed limiters I suppose an apology is in order. The F88 I drove did 75mph and a
great many cars did less, drivers choice, and they got p’d off with us right up their backside and complained non stop till something was done about it.
But today another prob. exists which is regularly complained about, overtaking commercials taking miles to complete the move,so we/you can all look
forward to restrictions being introduced on us lot overtaking, just like they do in Germany,it’s coming soon to a road near you.

Speed limiter■■? I know someone who’s been upto 83mph on the M20 in a Actros MP4 :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

All I know is he was running at about 35t gross at the time got upto 90 klicks eco roll and away she went, he looked down saw overspeed warning next thing gets an overspeed, signs it off in the office at 134kph maximum speed. :unamused:
