can anyone tell me if its an offence to warn other drivers of a mobile speed camera thats at the side of the road
Grey area. People have been prosecuted for it but some police forces post the detials of camera locations on their websites, which could be said to be a warning. Some radio stations also give the details out.
I seem to remember a case went to the Court of Appeal this year after the High Court ruled that it was illegal to warn of a camera or speed trap but the Appeal Court reversed the ruling and so it is now legal to warn other drivers.

Besides which, you weren’t warning them. You were attracting the attention of, then waving to, someone you thought you knew. When they got closer, you realised you were mistaken.
