As far as I know, you get done for speeding because you are speeding.
And the reason for that is because it kills people.
That’s just your opinion & it’s not one shared by the magustrates in this country

Speed by itself doesn’t kill other factors contribute & it is normally a chain of events that leads to a fatality not just speed

A car length is too short in my opinion also and I think you’ll find it’s an opinion shared by the DSA, police and road safety groups.

Calm down dear! Just seemed like an excellent time to drop a sly one in since jd123 mentioned not exceeding 40mph, and that is typical of most trolley drivers

And if you leave more than that, some [zb] is a 4 wheeler will notice the gap is about big enough and push into it…

So that’s two ‘professional drivers’ on this site who advocate tailgating. Unbelievable!

Yes you have the choice, but remember the guy in front i.e me, If I’m driving to the speed limit, please don’t start flashing me, or tailgating because I’m slowing you down.In most cases, the only way to get passed 40mph trucks is to tailgate. Leave a gap and 2 cars nip in front of you. Then when they pass the slow truck and you can’t, 2 more cars pull in front of you. I will always tailgate 40mph trucks, but it is never to intimidate or get them to speed up. Waste of time in my opinion, they don’t seem to look in their mirrors anyway.
So how do you know whats in front of Me?

How else do you convince car drivers not to pull into a gap that’s too small already? If I leave a safe space, like I want to, then 3 or 4 idiots will squeeze into it, and take it away again. It’s a catch 22, you cannot win!

You’re not bothered about causing its driver probable whiplash injuries, let alone whatever you do to yourself?

Right, so 44 tonnes moving at the “snail’s pace” of 40mph won’t do any damage if it hits something?
Most times its on good wide trunk roads and I can sit out a bit observing the road ahead. I have far better reflexes than some 40mph driver sitting on the cruise control with one foot on the dash.
No matter how good your reflexes, at 40mph you’re gonna rear end the guy in front if you’re a car length away from him.
Nearly 15 years on the road ignoring the 40 limit has seen me involved in no accidents whatsoever.
If you’ve been tailgating for these past 15 years as well, you’re a very lucky guy! As are the people you’ve been following…
Icey, your spot on if speeding kills at 32 about coppers doing 132 thats alright then, ■■■■■■■■ aint it and the the coppers in derbyshire all 59 of them,it,s mostly BUT not all the time about grabbing the cash ,99% of the time its grab the dosh and nowt else, one rule for the bent ■■■■■■■■ known as traffic police and the police in general and one rule for every one else.

But I am talking about clear main trunk roads, which is where most of my journeys are. I can sit out a bit looking ahead so I can see any hazards. If theres any junctions I ease off. I am only sitting close if I think there is a chance of getting passed. Usually this will only last a few minutes at most. If theres heavy oncoming traffic or bad bends then I can ease off. Most drivers ignore the 40 limit so it does not happen that often. Couple of times a week if that.

No, I never tailgate on motorways or dual carriageways. Theres no point and it is unsafe at that speed.

I have no objections to anyone sticking to the limit, it is entirely their business. A lot of them a very decent drivers and do pull over when there is a tailback. I never flash the lights or use the horn towards them, I just want passed. The only way to overtake safely is to sit reasonably close behind, usually just the length of a car.

IF the driver doing 40 has anything about him, he’ll position himself a little bit closer to the nearside, allowing the following Truck to see past him, but if he is being a ■■■■■ as many are, he’ll be sat on the white lines so you can’t see a thing, only option is, sit back an swear, or pull in for a cuppa
