Speed cam

After having a clean licence for many years I have received a NIP today - 38 in a 30 driving one of our Merc hiab dropsides.

It was mid evening in the dark at the bottom of a hill and it was a mobile police trap (very well hidden) not one of the council efforts.

Anyway it is what it is but I looked at my speedo and it said 34 - I’ll look at my dashcam later and see if its still there - just been on holiday for two weeks, this happened in the last half hour of my last shift.

So, guys n gals - will I be able to do a course and avoid the points or because it’s a truck am I a very naughty boy and not have that option - and is there anything else I should be prepared for?

Thanks in advance.

38 in a 30, very doubtful about offer for a speed awerness course…

Now if money was no object, then you could get Mr Nick loophole Freeman to defend you…

Sadly, I agree. You’ve got something to lose, see? Best you get addicted to drugs, father a few children by different women and nick a few sportsbikes, they won’t bother with you then.

Yes you will have the chance to take a course.

The speed awareness course tolerance is 10% + 9mph

so 30 + 10% + 9mph = 42, so you’re within the tolerance.
What you need to do now is fill in section one on your NIP (admit to being the driver) and wait for a postal response (takes about 2 weeks.)

When you get the response in the post, go online and book a course.

I know all this because I’m taking the course next Thursday lol…

Some forces tried to have the 10% tollerance.scrapped.

Speed awareness courses don`t work. I went on one a couple of years ago and I still got nicked for speeding this year.
I want my money back.

What ever happens once you get your 3 points you need to tell your car insurance.
I got 3 points about 4 years ago rang insurance told em premium went up about 20 for the year

If he gets a Speed Awareness course he won’t get any points…

In that position, I’d still be inclined to let the insurance company know. We all know what slippery buggers they are.

I did a speed awareness course a few years back , and was told no need to inform insurance as no points . However I’m of the opinion things have changed■■? I may be wrong ( I’m getting on a bit ) someone may be able to confirm / dispute this .

I got caught doing 43 in a 30 earlier in the year and was offered a course. Personally I thought the course was something that should be done anyway every so often and not just when you’re naughty.
Like just about everyone else I’ve spoken to about I’ve had my license for a good number of years and its only now that the government bodies seem so interested in our safety. They’re also skint… I often winder if theres a connection. [emoji57]

I went on a boring speed awareness course a few years ago and all the participants were asked why they were speeding and heard some weird comments but when it was my turn I just said ‘‘I drive a powerful BMW and speeding is expected of me, and it does have indicators but I don’t use them as I know where I’m going …’’ The instructor fella was not amused and said I should take it more seriously … :unamused:

It’s a pity speed awareness courses don’t count as part of the CPC !
If a speeding offence is severe enough don’t you get a meeting with the Traffic Commissioner as well as the courts ?

I’ve only attended one speed awareness course and that was after getting caught doing 46mph on the A69 north of Hexham. The irony being that I was caught the week before the limits changed and therefore attended a course to atone for an offence that no longer existed! :open_mouth:

My ex-wife went on one.

Everyone had to explain how and where they had been caught.

She came away with a better awareness of where the speed traps were in the locality

Well worth the time and money in her opinion

Just tell them if they ask, no more no less.
Admiral insurance ask if you’ve done a SAC in the last three years and penalise you for £25 for the privilege, at least they did four years ago.

so long as you dont start cursing and swearing or be disruptive then they can be as unamused as they wish as its only a show up and attend issue.
i sat in the side for the 2 hours, got lost in my own wee world, never said a word from start to finish and let the lemmings be the teachers pets.
it was a complete waste of everyones time as far as i could tell.
all you are doing is bribing the goverment £90 quid to not put points on your licence and creating some jobs for retired traffic wardems or security guards.

You do not need to inform your insurance company if you have been on a sac, they cannot check due to the data protection applied to sac, but if the government can see a revenue possibility by selling that information, then it may change.

If your insurer…

Directly asks the question ‘have you been prosecuted for a speeding offence or attended a speed awareness course in the last 5 years’ you HAVE to answer yes. To answer no will invalidate your policy.

It’s irrelevant north of the border, it’s straight to three points.
But anything to do with Admiral will cost you.
