Speed and Digital Tachographs

Hopefully this thread can remain in the PDF for a little while before being shunted into the forum that nobody visits.

As a digital tachograph newbie, can I ask if a digital tachograph records road speed, as a wax-disc tachograph does? Apart from the ā€œOverspeedā€ event messages, I couldn’t find anything to suggest it could.

No it doesn’t. However, it records the speed of the vehicle in whole Km/h for every second of vehicle movement. The data file can store upto 24 hours of movement. The file can be downloaded and displayed as a spreadsheet (very large; 86 400 cells) which looks pretty meaningless. There is software about that can take the stored data and turn it into a graph that looks more like a tacho chart speed trace, which is much easier to ā€˜read.’
