How is Spain doing, not been there for a while, heard Portugal and Italy in dire straits too, last time i was there, every waiter/ess was not from Spain, compared to the 90`s onwards, all Spanish jobs were done by the Spanish, how it is all changed,a driver told me,that he went for a job,the firm asked if he was Spanish,he was,he did not get the job,as they out source cheaper labour from another country,we all know what those are.
What gets me,is when you ring an Engish firm for a job in the Uk,the first thing they ask is,where do you come from, when it is too far away they hang up,how does that work for a driver getting a job in Portugal or Spain, when he/she rings, for a job,and says,im from Estonia/Lithuania/Bulgaria/Romania etc.etc, that is too far away too,but they get the job.

not much different to the UK then last time I was there it was hard to find anyone among the staff at Clackett Lane that even spoke English

maybe they live nearby who knows, since I have been here I have employed 1 Pole who just happened to live right where I needed a driver for pulling the trailers out of the port, he earns exactly the same as the other Spanish based drivers, apart from that I have 2 Dutch based here in Spain 1 lives near Zaragoza and the other near Burgos the rest are all Spanish and locals from where they are based and all are paid the same. So I suppose that a lot depends on the policy of the company concerned.
Talking of Burgos, most Brits would park up at Victors, the owner years ago was a grumpy man that never smiled,he had a beard,i think i was the only one to cross over the small pedestrian/goat and sheep bridge opposite the big cheese style hotel,it was a nice walk to an abondoned small village with cobble stoned old lanes and very old and falling down houses.
The last cafe at the end of the row at the Victors parking area,by the fuel station was a a fave of mine, the owners were from Galica, home made soups and old fashioned cooking at its best, spud soup with meat was the best in the freezing winters.
I think they are pinning all their hopes on the 1st of July when they ditch the Euro and adopt the Peseta again. We shall see.

only those that know no better and follow like sheep, the rest of us with sense steer well clear of the dump.
as far as finances go spains economy accounts for 10% of the european economy so it won’t be allowed to fail by the bigger countries.
as for jobs you need to speak romanian now to get a job, recently on the radio last years stats were announced as to population figures.
many people think there are lots of brits here but;
250,000 brits and over 800,000 romanians. most of the brits either work or are retired whereas the romanians either work for low pay or claim the dole as its more than they would get for working in their own country

Agreed. Only ever went there once, it was enough.
Well, the spanish stock market is up 10% in the last 2 days !. Still got over 20% unemployment and nearly 50% youth unemployment and the people are just about the most in debt in europe, never mind the government. The stock market would seem to think the worst is behind them though.

wasn’t the sudden rise something to do with portugal saying they only needed a small loan or something to that effect? didn’t catch all of it on the news yesterday
Spains balance of payments this year is going to be good they are buying next to nothing but their usual exports are selling at the usual rate in fact as far as wine is concerned volumes appear to have increased quite a bit.
Result very few foreign trucks in Spain,Spanish hauliers are not going north as they will not get a return load.
Paradise as far as I am concerned all rates except long term contracts have been put up by more than 50% and I still cannot find enough trucks to move it all

Forget the finances, it was the wine comment that interested me. Spanish wine sales are booming, unfortunately most of it is going to China, well as long as they leave me some rioja they can have it.
dunno about it going to China but since Xmas have loaded more than 60 trailers just for 1 Dutch supermarket chain
HI Vas,
“Quote” Paradise as far as I am concerned all rates except long term contracts have been put up by more than 50% and I still cannot find enough trucks to move it all
So, is it just a shortage of Spanish trucks or all nationalities ? because if the rates have gone up that much, I would have thought that
companies and O/D’s would make an effort to get their trucks down to Spain, or have rates across Europe increased as well.

Rates to the UK are very good for us at the minute (in Gibraltar), because as Vasco says the Spaniards dont want to go there, and there thankfully there arent many Brits coming into Spain looking for backloads. Our backload rates south are healthy too for the same reasons. We also benefit from a much lower fixed overhead, lower fuel costs and lower taxes than UK operators. We are in fact “bloody foreigners”!

all nationalities but no one is going to run down empty just to get a good rate back are they ?
Hombre, all those ropey old Magnums are UK reg aren’t they ?. I would of though if you are doing so well you might invest in some decent kit ?.
Vasco, rates up 50% ?. Must of been from a very low level. What does a load back to the UK pay these days ?.

our rates can´t be that we low we appear to have survived the crisis up to now and even have new trucks and trailers on order, we did take the step of cutting the fleet down by 40 motors at the beginning of the crisis but it has been stable ever since and I have not had anyone parked up with nothing to do unless they have to have a statutory break.
Prices to the UK ? no idea we do not go there
Vasco, what’s your company ?. Your around the Basque area aren’t you. That Olano group is one hell of a company now isn’t it ?.

company is Van Overveld, I ambased just outside San Sebastian
Olano ? French medium sized company mainly fish that they run in fridges
I went by Olano’s depot at christmas. I was amazed at the size of the place. 4 to 500 trucks, that is some medium sized firm. Had a look at your website, looks an impressive set up.
