You don’t say what part of Southampton you’re coming from, if it’s from the docks then each to their own, but I would do… A33 West, M271, M27, M3 then as said above.
DO NOT go salisbury way, there is a 13.9" bridge ( or is it 14.3", whatever)
going through bath is a ■■■■■ anyway.
If you go Salisbury way, you can avoid the low bridge at Wilton quite easily.
In a rush? why not turn left out of Southampton, M27, A31, A37 up Past Dorchester to Yeovil, A3088 over to A303, A358 to M5 at Taunton and run up to Avonmouth… slightly longer, but nice cross country drive.

Shorter yes but not quicker. You might save 20 odd mile or so but an 80 mile jaunt across country is going to waste far more time than you save in mileage.
