Chris Webb:
Hi Pete,sorry to ā– ā– ā– ā–  in.
In about 1968 I loaded plate on a Reiver for Bradford out of what you call the Abbey (SCOW).I’m sure that if I wanted the plate banding on it was done for me but I had to fetch the banding from somewhere out of a shed, otherwise no banding. Can you or anybody on this thread recall that?

Chris

i remember when it was SCOW mate.i used to shunt in there for holloway bros.then local for blue line {first time i was with them]we used to get the banding wire which was already cut in lengths by the banders.we put the bands in place around the wagon making sure no wires were caught underneath then give them a shout to tighten them up.they were a lazy lot and had more mealbreaks than work done.i did it myself one day and nearly had the works on strike.SCOW had green atkinsons with the welsh dragon on them.thats going back a bit.only us oldies will remember them. ade.

hello pete.
on the subject of scow leylands i am sure when i was a kid a couple of years ago the tops of the cabs were painted white and they definately carried a board above the windscreen displaying the steel company of wales.
graham.

morning graham,
you are right, those were the scow colours.i have a colour photo of an octopus.
regards andrew

andrew,i used to go everywhere with my dad in a leyland octopus of jones motors, later joints.i loved it and went whenever i wasnt in school {and when i could get away with it when i should have been in school]no tachos then.dad used to rip up his locsheet and make out another one as they had no serial no,s either.long memories ago.ade.

hiya,
Did the Albion Caledonian have the same running gear as the Leyland Octopus of the same era ā– ā– , once heard it mentioned that Albion used a different double drive axle and they always used duoble drive whereas Leyland produced some with the trailing axle set-up these was a bit of a no-no in snowy conditions and a nightmare when hooked up to a drawbar i’ve had some.
thanks harry long retired.

Hiya ā€œHā€ I read somewhere that apart from the Leyland cab the Caledonian was different in all respects!!! But i fancied it must have used the Leyland 600 engine because i don’t think Albion made a big engine.I also read that the big Albion was superior to the Octopus which was why the Powers that be at Leyland killed it off! Dennis.

Hi Dennis, r.e. Caledonian, The lorry used Leyland cab 0600 engine and Leyland 5 speed gearbox, everything
else was pure Albion. The lorry was introduced in 1957 It seems a lot of hauliers had good service from the previous model Albion H.D. and refused to buy the Octopus, Leyland management then decided to compromise
and produced this model to try to gain some lost business.
The Albion H.D. ( A very good lorry ) was discontinued by Leyland in 1954, they assumed that hauliers would
buy the Octopus, The H.D. used the 0600 engine alongside side Albions own E.N.253 9.9 ltr engine
this engine was slightly larger than the 0600 of 9.8ltr. Leyland discontinued Albions engine saying that it cost
to much to produce, when compared with their 0600, Then 20 years later did the same to A.E.C. and we all
know what happened next
Richard

Thanks for filling the gaps in Richard! I wasn’t sure that Albion had produced their own large diesel!I’ve also remembered that Bulwark Tankers were users of the Albion 8 wheeler as tankers and there was a haulier/Steel maker in S.Wales that ran some as well? Cheers Dennis.
