Hiya Andrew, sobered up yet mate? I re-call that F86 when it was new in '67 it used to run down the A6 loaded with Pulp wood from the Kielder forest to Bowaters Ellesmere Port,it had a hard life IIRC,it was quite a novelty at the time and was probably the first Volvo that Taits of Haydon Bridge sold as the areas distributors.

hi dennis,
yes mate,i am sober now.i can’t handle excessive amounts of strongbow these days  ,reckon i am getting past it  ,went to bed at 7.30 last night  .i bet you remember that f86 as she would have been a fairly regular sight.i can remember the shell ad’s in truck magazine mentioning it hauling pit props? that f86 and a.d. boyes’ would be amongst the first f86 artics in the u.k.joint motorways had two g registered f86’s new, entress had literally dozens and dozens  .
regards andrew

Question Andrew----LNL 465E & LTY608E both F86s and both laying claim to be the first in the UK! were they both run by Hutchinsons do you know?I’ve meant to ask this Q before as the reg nos. are close and probably both from Northhumberland!Cheers Dennis.

hi dennis,
the first f86 in the uk is questionable?i think alec boyes had his new,she was later a shunter at workington steelworks?, hutchinson’s certainley had lnl.osgerby’s transport have also owned an early one from new.i don’t think that boyes and hutchinson’s were very far away distance wise,so they may?have been supplied by the same dealer, selling those funny looking swedish lorries,na,they will never catch on  .r.i.p the uk truck manufacturers.
regards andrew

hi graham,
a great weekend, yet again steve evans and team fairford pulled out all the stops!and thanks to our mate neil mechanic77 for the kind words previousley.danny, now he’s not scared    .10 years of the steelboys, where does the time go? .i remember you saying to me whilst in the cab of my f88,"why don’t we have a run to gaydon?"we could call it the steelboys.its come a long way since then    .

Thanks for that Andrew but I can tell you that the Boyes lads never ran an F86 in their small fleet, they got their first artic(a D1000) in late 67 or early 68 on an F plate, and their first F88 in around '72 in believe. The ■■■■■■■■■■ reg nos were AO and RM and I was only asking if Hutchinsons maybe ran both of them? Cheers Dennis.

pete 359:
i am sure you remember paul davies.

aye i remember paul.wasnt his brother transport manager for a while.after i left i think.he worked for kontour i think it was tony davies, yes i,m sure it was now i think about it.i havent seen them for years.also in the garage at the time was ajmal there was a tidy fitter for you.you knew when he,d done a job on your truck you were ok.i think peter modicay was in charge then of the workshop.before he retired and clayton took over.jack spragg, brian parry.good bunch of lads.when i first started with vale transport geoff person was the fitter.they dont make em like him no more.he used to spray them, mend them, panel beat them and drive them.i wonder where he is now.sarn boy he was but lived in cornelly.liked his lotus cortina.old ■■■■ raymond had a good boy there.

hi all,
joint motorways daf 95,brand new loaded with colour coated steel for purfleet.

k600 jmh at the slab yard llanwern

k222 jmh empty in the midlands.

daf loaded with refractories from robert lickley’s in dudley.

spring 2000 and my good friend charles lee called around to work with the first man tga that i had ever seen.

Hi Pete,sorry to ■■■■ in.
In about 1968 I loaded plate on a Reiver for Bradford out of what you call the Abbey (SCOW).I’m sure that if I wanted the plate banding on it was done for me but I had to fetch the banding from somewhere out of a shed, otherwise no banding. Can you or anybody on this thread recall that?

Chris

Sorry,it’s Andrew not Pete. :unamused:
It was a union thing IIRC.I didn’t argue, fetched the banding wire and they secured it. It still had the big “Steel Company of Wales” letters on the plant sides and I think some of the wagons,Leyland Octopussies mostly, still had the Welsh dragon symbol on the cabs in a green livery(Or am I thinking of Shotton?).Steel industry was nationalized in 1967 I think?

Chris

hi chris,
aah the wonderful unions, back in the days when goods were manufactured here.the scow motors were green and they ran plenty of leylands, then later atki artics.with 120 gardners in them  .that would be a starter motor by todays standards  .
