South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

A B Freight part of K N K Transport had all types of vehicles including this crane

Hi Lads
The K series Dodge that was spotted one early morning in Llantwit Fardre is mine!,and i was taking it to Llantrisant Testing station to get an MOT,it is just a chassis cab at the moment and i am having problems getting it MOT’d because i had the by the book MOT inspector who said as it was not capable of carrying a load he could not MOT it.told him it was in memory of my grandfather and would never be used apart from shows but to no avail.
Bought from Castle Carey, whilst i was at the testing station one of the inspectors asked who owned the Dodge and when i said it was mine he said he could remember working on it in Tondu garages as it was new to the National Coal Board and he still had work shop paperwork for it! So i’ve brought her back home.Showed her at my local car show in Tonyrefail last year and a fella came up to me and said he could remember driving it for the National Coal Board and she was one of three new to the NCB GHB 333N GHB 334N and mine GHB335N.Hope this helps solve the mystery.
Hopefully get an MOT this Summer and make the V8 540 turbo sing!

Yanto 36, thats a great story. You say its got a turbo on it. I must admit I did not know perkins did one. I drove a 6 wheel tipper m reg with a 510 V8, which was also ex coalboard obo 296 m.

Andrew, I was having photo withdrawal, so being that this is a site about lorries and diesel engines, I thought I would inject some humor.

Komatsu 450, great batch of photos.

Regards Paul

hello paul john.
i can remember the dodge you refer to, there was three of them if i remember correctly and they spent a great deal of their lives hauling shale from taff merthyr colliery up to the graig valley in bedlinog.i also remember two eight wheeler fodens s80 s that were also used on the same task.do you remember a driver from the ncb called dennis booth, he was based in brittania transport pool.i think the fodens index was obo 250m & obo251m please correct me if i am wrong.
regards graham.

Hi Graham, back in 1981 obo 296m was owned by Alan Price. It was 6 yrs old and pretty well worn out. It was my first motor and used only on daywork for the NCB. I think the fartherst I took her was Cwm Ebbw Vale. The alloy body was in good shape, and transferred to a road going dodge on a p plate. Alan and I went over to Aberdare to pick this up, it had been standing for a while but was in good shape. This was good enough to run with the Deutz’s.
I didn’t know Dennis Booth, and can not remember the Fodens. There was a NCB D series 6 wheel Ford with a V8 ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  in it, and I would fly by it.
The only guys I remember, from the pool was Des Leddington, Frankie Minton and Tom Burchill.

Regards Paul

Hi Paul
It is an amazing story and i could’nt believe it when they came upto me.My fathers business used to run red shale back in the 70’s aswell from tips in Cileley, Tonyrefail, Maesteg and Havards in Ton Pentre, so that’s why i’ve always loved the old dodge k series!

She is fitted with a v8 540 turbo which the previous owner put in out of a dennis fire engine and he moved the tandem axle forward to make her into a artic unit but i had to remove it to try and mot it. Ian

I have a photo of a ā€˜Ballroom Cab’ Foden in a restored condition on display at Madiera Drive in Brighton. Its restored in its NCB livery and its reg is OBO 251 M, so hopefully its still about somewhere.

I am glad I was not losing my marbles :unamused: I guessed it was running down to the MOT station. Well done Yanto36, cant wait to see it in daylight in the flesh.

Malcolm, well spotted, not a skip but a 6x4 tractor. Well a 6x4 tipper chassis cut down to a tractor.

yanto 36, I would not want to take advantage of pete359 good nature or put him on the spot, but he has a wealth of knowledge regarding show trucks and may be able to advise you with the plating problems along with other members of this site.

Good Luck Paul

It was a dark wet morning and it was in a convoy of wagons, and at 7.15 my eyes were’nt quite open!!! There are now 265 Commercials on the Caitlin House register, this will be the only Dodge, fantastic effort! Could it still have a tipper body fitted?, or is it now too short?

hello paul john.
thanks for the info on the dodge,if the truck is ex ncb i am pretty sure there were three in total along with the two foden s80 s. the main reason for the purchase of these tippers was the arial flight that took the waste from taff merthyr colliery& the trelewis drift mine was decomissioned and the waste was transported to the graig valley.when the tipping area up the graig was full the waste was then transported by rail to the nelson bog, all of these trucks had a real dogging in a few short years.
regards graham.

hello malcolm kirk.
i am not sure who commented on the photo of the foden s80,if it was you could you upload on trucknet please.
regards graham.

Hiya …stick a van body on your dodge put some seats and a cooker in the van with a bed and its mot exempt its a living van and cannot carry a load.
if you look around there are loads of logs with a caravan hideing inside. my mate has a tipper trailer fitted out and thats mot exempt.
good luck beat the system.

hi all,
yes john you are right mate.allthough i and several other members have heard that vosa are making attempts at blocking all vehicles mot exempt status.i/we are led to believe that vosa propose everything that is now mot exempt, will when they say so at some point in the future :open_mouth: ,require a full annual mot :imp: on a lighter note here’s one from, in my opinion the biggest name in tipper haulage in south wales.alan price and sons from bargoed have gone from strength to strength over the many years that they have been in the haulage industry.

i see these trucks everyday coming into south cornelly, noticed a smart fh this afternoon   a customer of ours that runs an identical outfit to this one tells me these motors are 22 tonnes empty.

a celtic recycling man and hino.the hino is only 2 years old and is already rusting away like a 1974 ford cortina.
